Modern medicines are double-edged weapons, and we need to use it responsibly. Overuse, Underuse, or Wrong use leads to either adverse drug reactions or no therapeutic effect. Rampant Self-medication is to be avoided. Frequent Use of painkillers, acidity pills is common and is harmful. Popping a pill for every ill, postponing visits to the doctor, avoiding diagnostic tests can complicate the health issues. Also, when Doctors prescribe us any short-term or long-term medicines treatment, compliance to it is MUST. Leaving course of antibiotics halfway or missing pills for chronic conditions like high blood pressure, diabetes could lead to serious complications. Thus, overall one needs to be much responsible when it comes to medicine usage. Of course, our goal should be to maintain quality of life and a life where one doesn’t need to take support of the medicines but if one has to, then it has to be a responsible use.
Being Health Literate is essential and here I remember Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru once famously said that “if you educate a man you educate an individual, however, if you educate a woman you educate a whole family.” It is absolutely true for health literacy too. As Nehru’s quote rightly observed, women, play a pivotal role in raising a family irrespective of whether they are homemakers or working women. Women take a lot of responsibility for health of the family and are main caregivers for children, elderly. And this scenario is not just in India but is the world over, For example, In the USA, about 75% of family caregivers are women, and approximately 25% are spouses.
If a woman is health literate, her family’s health will be much secured. Let’s be more conscious when it comes to illness and wellness for self or for family. Health is a neglected agenda for most women and it costs a lot to self and the family. Self-care is of utmost importance. It is said that the best investment one can make is in yourself. Let’s start consciously investing in this sphere for physical, mental, and social health.
