Ever wondered why periods usually last around 5 days?

Every month, the uterus forms a lining (endometrial layer) in preparation for pregnancy. When pregnancy doesn’t occur, there is a sudden hormonal switch, estrogen and progesterone levels fall and the body starts shedding this layer.

As the lining sheds, bleeding occurs.
It also takes a few days for the blood vessels to constrict and stop bleeding, which is why a normal period can last anywhere between 3 to 7 days.

However:
• Bleeding less than 3 days
• Bleeding more than 7 days
• Very heavy or very scanty flow

These are signs that you should consult your gynecologist for proper evaluation.

Your periods are a vital health signal listen to them.

Many pregnant women come with this exact concern, and it’s a very valid question. Not every pain means labour has started.
To differentiate true labour pains from false or preparatory pains, we clinically assess a few important things:
We check the cervix, how much it has dilated, its thickness (effacement), and whether the baby’s head is positioned downwards. We also examine if the bag of membranes is intact and, most importantly, the pattern of uterine contractions.
True labour pains follow a rhythm. They come at regular intervals, usually every 10 minutes ,and each contraction lasts around 30–40 seconds. If you’re feeling 3–4 such regular contractions, it often indicates that labour has begun.
Pain that is continuous, irregular, or comes and goes over hours is usually not true labour. These are often false or preparatory pains, which are common as the body prepares for delivery.
When in doubt, never self-diagnose. A timely examination by your doctor is the safest way to understand what your body is signalling.

Letrozole is a commonly prescribed ovulation-inducing medication and is often a first-line treatment used by gynecologists for ovarian stimulation in women planning pregnancy. While it is generally safe and effective, being informed about possible side effects helps you stay prepared and stress-free during treatment.

You may experience mild tiredness, emotional changes, or mood swings due to temporary hormonal fluctuations, this is normal. Some women also report bloating or nausea, which can occur with many fertility medications.

What you should be mindful of is lower abdominal stretching or discomfort, which happens as the ovaries respond to stimulation. However, if you notice sharp, severe, or sudden abdominal pain, it could indicate Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS). Although OHSS is rare with Letrozole, it is a serious condition and requires immediate medical attention.

Always stay in close touch with your gynecologist during fertility treatment. Early reporting of symptoms ensures safe and successful ovulation induction.

Pollution levels are rising, and many patients ask how they can protect themselves. When you step outside, always wear a mask, preferably an N95. Limit unnecessary outdoor exposure, especially during peak pollution hours. Keep an air purifier at home, stay well-hydrated, and support your immunity with nutrient-dense foods like nuts, turmeric milk, and green vegetables.

If you experience any breathing discomfort, irritation, or flu-like symptoms, do not ignore them. Consult your doctor promptly.
This is also the right time to consider getting your flu shot.

Normal Delivery: 3 Common Myths-Busted by Medical Facts

Many expecting parents hear frightening statements during pregnancy that simply aren’t true. Let’s clear the confusion with facts:

Myth 1: “If labor is induced, normal delivery is not safe.”
Medical induction (augmentation) is a controlled and safe process. With proper monitoring, many women go on to have a successful normal delivery.

Myth 2: “If the umbilical cord is around the baby’s neck, a C-section is compulsory.”
Not always. With continuous fetal heart rate monitoring during labor, normal delivery is often possible even with a cord around the neck.

Myth 3: “If the baby weighs 3.5 kg, normal delivery is impossible.”
Baby’s weight alone does not decide the mode of delivery. With proper labor progress and close monitoring, normal delivery is still very much possible.

Bottom line:
With careful monitoring of the baby’s heartbeat and the mother’s labor progress, normal delivery is achievable in many cases that are often wrongly feared.

Winter Pregnancy Care: 5 Simple Tips for a Healthy & Comfortable Season

✔️ Stay warm, not overheated – Keep yourself covered but avoid sweating. Overheating is not good during pregnancy.
✔️ Hydration is a must – Even if you don’t feel thirsty, keep your fluid intake regular through water, soups, juices & milk.
✔️ Moisturize daily – Dry winter skin can lead to itching and stretch marks, so nourish your skin well.
✔️ Stay active indoors – Cold weather doesn’t mean no movement. Do light exercises or indoor walks to keep circulation healthy.
✔️ Listen to your body – Rest well, eat well, and don’t ignore discomfort.

With the right care, winter pregnancy can actually be one of the most comfortable phases of your journey.

Folic Acid vs Folate - What’s the REAL Difference?
Many women get confused when the doctor prescribes folate instead of folic acid. Are they the same? Here’s the simple explanation:

Folic Acid → Synthetic form
Commonly taken when planning pregnancy.

Methylfolate (Folate) → Active form
Given especially to women who have a gene mutation that prevents folic acid from converting into its usable form.
Methylfolate directly supports the body by overriding this pathway.

Why is it important?
Because it helps prevent neural tube defects and supports early brain development in the baby.

Best taken pre-conception and during the first 3 months of pregnancy.

Share this with someone planning a pregnancy- it can make a big difference.

As gynecologists, we study everything - the theory, the physiology, every detail of fetal movements.
But when you’re pregnant yourself… it’s completely different.
You don’t actually know what that first movement feels like until you experience it.

I still remember being in the OT with my senior, and suddenly I felt something in my stomach.
For a second I paused - and then I realized, ‘Oh… this is my baby’s first movement.
Even though I knew it would happen, the feeling is unlike anything else.

That’s why when a patient asks, ‘Why haven’t I felt movement yet?
I always tell them - the first movement is very subtle, almost like a flutter.
And in your next pregnancy, you’ll instantly recognize it.

So yes, I knew the nausea, I knew the symptoms, I knew the science…
but experiencing it myself made everything real.
