The New Rule: Drink Water When You Are Thirsty

How much water should you drink? Eight glasses a day? Or 3 litres a day? While it is true that it is absolutely necessary for the body to stay well hydrated throughout the day, and that water is the most desired element in the body, but really, you should just drink when you’re thirsty. Your body is pretty good at judging when it's low on water. In fact, force-feeding the water when you’re not thirsty might even confuse your brain.

Plain water is not the only source of hydration the body needs in a day. You can fill the quota of water through different nutrient rich sources – fruits, juices, and water-rich vegetables.

So, forget the strict 8 or 10 glass water regimen, and stop forcing yourself to drink when you’re not thirsty. Your brain has many years of evolutionary training to help you figure out when to drink, and how much, and you should just listen to it.
