Stanford scientists measured ➡️ Cortisol drops by 80% in 3
minutes. Pulse decreases by 20 beats. Blood pressure normalizes.
First step: “Box breathing” ( In yoga this is an advanced breathing practice: Ratio Breathing/Yogic Deep Breathing ( PURAK - RECHAK - KUMBHAK )
4-4-4-4
Inhale 4 seconds - BUT through nose, tongue touches
the palate
Hold 4 seconds - BUT with abdominal muscle tension
Exhale 4 seconds - BUT through mouth, lips pursed Pause 4 seconds - BUT with complete relaxation
Westerners copy the count but miss the tongue and lip positioning. And this is what activates the vagus - the main nerve.
Second step: “Hara point”
Place three fingers below your navel.
Press with medium force & hold throughout the breathing.
There’s a cluster of vagus nerve endings there. It’s like a
“TURN OFF PANIC” button in your body.
Third step: “Gaze into nowhere”
Don’t close your eyes - it amplifies internal dialogue. Look straight ahead but defocus your gaze. As if looking through a wall. The amygdala (fear center) shuts down when eyes don’t focus on danger.
Why exactly 3 minutes?
3 minutes = 12 breathing cycles.
This is the minimum time to reboot the nervous system.
Less - doesn’t have time to switch.
More - the brain starts looking for new reasons for anxiety.
Stanford study: 500 top managers did the technique before negotiations
87% closed deals on better terms
92% didn’t raise their voice during arguments
Control group without technique: Only 34% successful deals, 65% emotional breakdowns.
When to apply:
MORNING after waking up
BEFORE a difficult conversation - 3minutes before meeting
AFTER conflict
BEFORE SLEEP
BOTTOM LINE: Do it at the first sign of anxiety.
Don’t wait until cortisol skyrockets. Catch it on the rise.
