Sleep Apnea: The Overlooked Lifestyle Disorder

Sleep apnea is a common yet often undiagnosed condition that affects breathing during sleep. Individuals with this disorder experience repeated interruptions in their breathing, sometimes hundreds of times in one night. These pauses can last from a few seconds to minutes and typically result in fragmented, poor-quality sleep.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), the most prevalent type, occurs when the muscles at the back of the throat fail to keep the airway open. Central Sleep Apnea (CSA), although less common, is caused by a failure of the brain to signal the muscles to breathe. Risk factors include obesity, smoking, sedentary lifestyle, nasal congestion, and certain anatomical features like a narrow airway or thick neck.

Left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to serious health complications such as hypertension, heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and cognitive dysfunction. It may also significantly impair daytime alertness, increasing the risk of accidents and reducing productivity.

Fortunately, sleep apnea is manageable. Lifestyle changes, weight management, and the use of CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) devices can drastically improve sleep quality and overall health. If you or a loved one snores loudly, wakes up tired, or feels drowsy during the day, it’s important to consult a pulmonologist for timely diagnosis and treatment.

A cough that never goes away — especially with mucus — is not something to ignore.

You may be dealing with Bronchiectasis, a condition where damaged airways trap mucus, making you prone to infections.
It’s commonly caused by repeated infections, tuberculosis, or immune issues, and can lead to serious breathing problems if untreated.

Don’t just treat symptoms — get a proper diagnosis.

See a pulmonologist if your cough persists.
