This is the story of a 16-year-old boy diagnosed with a rare disorder — X-linked sideroblastic anemia.
For years, he remained transfusion dependent, requiring repeated blood transfusions. When he came to us for a potential cure through stem cell transplantation, the biggest challenge was the non-availability of a matched related or unrelated donor.
After detailed discussions with the family, we decided to proceed with a haploidentical stem cell transplant using his sister as the donor.
Today, 18 months after transplant, he is transfusion-independent, GVHD-free, and has full donor chimerism.
I am happy to share that his case report has now been published in Pediatric Blood & Cancer. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported case of haploidentical transplantation in X-linked sideroblastic anemia.
This achievement reflects the power of teamwork in modern medicine.
My sincere thanks to Dr. Abhishek Raj, Dr. Imam Ather, Dr. Sapna Chopra, and Dr. Dinesh Pendharkar- You made this possible. 🙏
A special thanks to our BMT nursing team, whose dedication and meticulous care are the backbone of every transplant program.
And most importantly, our deepest gratitude to the patient and his family for placing their trust in us and walking this challenging journey with courage and hope.
