Title:Unusual Gingival Swelling Without Pain: A Case of Localized Gingivitis Treated with Gingivectomy
Abstract:
A patient presented with a painless gingival swelling that had persisted for approximately two months. Clinical examination and diagnosis revealed localized gingivitis. A gingivectomy procedure was successfully performed to remove the affected tissue. This case highlights the importance of recognizing asymptomatic gingival changes and the effectiveness of gingivectomy in managing localized gingival overgrowth.
Introduction:
Gingivitis is a common periodontal condition, often characterized by inflammation, redness, and bleeding of the gingiva. However, in certain cases, it may present as painless swelling, which can delay treatment. This report presents a case of localized gingivitis with unusual presentation, managed through surgical intervention.
Case Presentation:
A patient reported to our clinic with a complaint of unusual swelling in the gingiva, which had been present for around two months. The swelling was localized and non-tender, with no associated pain or bleeding.
Clinical Findings:
Localized gingival overgrowth in a specific quadrant
No pain, pus discharge, or bleeding on probing
Good general oral hygiene
Diagnosis:
Based on clinical evaluation, the condition was diagnosed as localized gingivitis.
Treatment Plan:
A surgical approach was planned due to the chronic nature and size of the swelling. The patient underwent gingivectomy under local anesthesia.
Procedure:
A pocket marker was used to outline the affected gingiva.
Excess tissue was excised using a scalpel.
Hemostasis was achieved, and a periodontal dressing was placed.
Post-operative instructions were given, and the patient was advised on oral hygiene maintenance.
Outcome and Follow-up:
The procedure was uneventful, and healing progressed well. On follow-up, the gingival tissue showed healthy appearance and no recurrence of swelling.
Discussion:
While gingivitis commonly presents with classic signs like redness and bleeding, this case demonstrates an atypical presentation where swelling was the only symptom. It underscores the importance of early examination and appropriate surgical management.
Conclusion:
Gingivectomy remains an effective treatment for managing localized gingival overgrowth when non-surgical methods are insufficient. Asymptomatic gingival changes should not be ignored, as they may signify underlying pathology.
