Recently, I met a 70-year-old patient with severe chest pain. His angiogram showed a complex triple vessel disease, a situation where multiple arteries are blocked. Understandably, his family was anxious. “Is stenting enough? Should we consider bypass surgery? Is he too old for surgery?”

This is where we say medicine is not a solo act rather it’s a team sport.
At AIG Heart Team, every such complex case is discussed in detail with interventional cardiologists, cardiac surgeons, anesthesiologists, and critical care experts all at the same table. We weigh the risks, the patient’s age, other health conditions like diabetes or kidney function, and his personal wishes.

In this case, we realized that a carefully planned complex PCI (stenting) would be safer than open-heart surgery, given his age and other medical conditions. Our surgeons and anesthesiologists prepared a standby plan to handle any complication. The procedure went smoothly and the patient walked out of the hospital in three days, smiling.
This is the power of a Heart Team approach, not just a procedure, but a collaborative decision that puts the patient at the center.

In my consultations, I often hear people proudly say they’re on Keto, Low-Carb, Gluten-Free, or some other trendy diet. While some form of this discipline is commendable, I worry about how much we are complicating what should be simple: nourishing our bodies.

The truth is, our grandparents had it right. Indian food wisdom is rooted in balance, fermented foods for gut health, millets for fiber and slow energy release, seasonal vegetables, and lean proteins like eggs, fish, and chicken in their natural form.

One timeless principle I admire is the Japanese concept of Hara Hachi Bu that is eat until you’re 80% full. This single habit can transform your relationship with food more than any restrictive diet ever will.

Instead of chasing the next fad, ask yourself: Can I do this for the next 10 years?
If the answer is no, it’s not worth it. Sustainability beats extremes, every time.

Let’s return to our roots...simple, local, balanced meals and focus on moderation & mindful portions. It’s not magic...it’s common sense.

Your heart, and your gut, will thank you for it.

I often meet mid-career professionals who say, “Doctor, I want to start running or hit the gym, but I’m afraid I’ll injure myself or strain my heart.”

It’s a valid concern but also one that shouldn’t hold you back from taking charge of your health.

The human body, even in your 40s or 50s, is far more adaptable than we think. The key is not intensity but consistency.

Here’s how you can begin safely:
- Start small: Begin with a 15-minute walk, light yoga, or a few stretching routines
- Progress gradually: Increase duration or intensity week by week
- Listen to your body: Slight fatigue/weakness is fine, pain is not
- Warm-up and cool-down: Don’t skip them; they prevent 90% of avoidable injuries
- Get a basic health check-up: If you’ve been sedentary for years or have risk factors like BP, cholesterol, or family history
- Hydrate, rest, and fuel well

Remember, fitness is not a race...it’s a lifelong relationship.

One of my patients, a 45-year-old IT professional, started with 10-minute morning walks. Today, he runs 5 km thrice a week and feels stronger than ever both physically and mentally and intends to take part in the upcoming Hyderabad Marathon.

Don’t fear the beginning. Fear the consequence of not beginning at all.
