Slip Disc at L4-L5 treated with TLIF Surgery
L4-L5 slip disc, also as lumbar disc herniation,
Is common issue in lower back where disc between forth and fifth vertebra in lower back bulges or comes out because of annular tear and gives pressure over the spinal cord and surrounding nerves.
This usually occur because of age related changes, heavy weight lifting, poor posture, obesity, or some other injury.
Common symptoms are lower back pain, leg pain which patients often hear as sciatica, numbness, tingling, or weakness in their legs. It can also cause heaviness in legs while walking. Most of the patients usually complain of lower back pain travelling in legs upto the toes.
Diagnosis is usually done by thorough clinical examination by spine surgeon along with X-rays and CT scan or MRI is necessary.
Most of the patients usually gets relief with few days of bed rest some medications followed by physiotherapy. If there is no relief in particular period, patient may require injection in lower back which is commonly known as transforaminal root block.
If these treatments don't give any relief surgery may be required.
Most common surgery done is TLIF surgery (Transforaminal Lumbar Interbody Fusion). In this procedure L4 and L5 vertebras are fixed with titanium screws and L4 L5 disc is excised. L4L5 disc is replaced with special cage which helps in fusion of L4 and L5 vertebra. After the surgery most patients walk within 24 hours without any discomfort.
