Asthma is a chronic (long-term) inflammatory disease of the airways in the lungs. It affects people of all ages and is characterized by recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and coughing—especially at night or early morning.

Key Features of Asthma:

1. Airway Inflammation: The airways become red, swollen, and sensitive.
2. Bronchoconstriction: Muscles around the airways tighten, narrowing the air passages.
3. Increased Mucus Production: Extra mucus can further block airways.

Common Triggers:-

Outdoor and Indoor Allergens: Pollen, dust mites, mold, pet dander.
Irritants: Smoke, pollution, strong odors.
Exercise: Especially in cold, dry air.
Infections: Respiratory viruses.
Weather changes, stress, or strong emotions.

Symptoms:

* Wheezing
* Shortness of breath
* Chest tightness
* Coughing (often worse at night or early morning)

Diagnosis:

* Medical history
* Physical exam
* Lung function tests _PFT (like spirometry)

Treatment:

1. Quick-relief medications (rescue inhalers like albuterol)
2. Long-term control medications:

* Inhaled corticosteroids
* Long-acting beta-agonists (LABAs)
* Leukotriene modifiers
3. Avoiding triggers
4. Monitoring with an asthma action plan

Types of Asthma:

* Allergic asthma**
* Non-allergic asthma**
* Exercise-induced bronchoconstriction (EIB)**
* Occupational asthma**
* Childhood asthma**

"World COPD Awareness Month"

🫁Lung health is vital for our overall well being.Knowing your lung function can help us understand our respiratory health & identify potential issues at an early stage.

🫁To know your lung function, a simple spirometry test can be performed.

🫁Spirometry is a simple test used to help diagnose and monitor certain lung conditions such as asthma & COPD using a device called a spirometer.

🫁Such Pulmonary function tests will be done by your doctor if you have airway symptoms like chronic cough, shortness of breath, chest tightness, difficulty breathing or taking a deep breath or wheezing.

🫁Aerobic activities like walking, running play vital role in improvingcardio-vascular & Pulmonary fitness. Apart from walking, performing some lung exercises can increase lung capacity and keep lungs active. Using an incentive spirometer is one of the easiest ways to maintain your lungs strength & preserve lung integrity.

🫁How to use a 3 ball incentive spirometer :

Step 1: Sit down comfortably on a chair

Step 2: Hold your spirometer straight at eye level

Step 3: Put the mouthpiece in your mouth and close your lips tightly

Step 4: Slowly breathe in through your mouth as much as possible to raise the balls. Try to take the balls as high as you can. Repeat as instructed by your doctor

Step 5: Now turn the spirometer upside down and exhale in the mouthpiece to raise the balls again.

I strongly recommend you all to walk regularly, practice breathing techniques, and keep measuring your lung function regularly to keep a track of your lung function & respiratory diseases.
