Major Milestone: “100” major surgeries for various gynaecological cancers and precancerous conditions performed at STNM Hospital
It gives me immense pleasure to inform that, “100th” major surgery for various gynaecological cancer and precancers was performed successfully at STNM Hospital last week, within a span of one year after joining as a Gynaecological Oncosurgeon after completing and being the first person to complete M.Ch in Gynaecological Oncology (super speciality in gynaecological cancers) from Sikkim and North-East region.
Our first surgery was for a patient with stage 3 cancer of uterus who underwent extensive surgery with removal of uterus, ovaries, lymph nodes along the major vessels and our “100th”case is a patient with stage 3 cancer of o***y who had received four cycles of chemotherapy and now has undergone Interval Cytoreductive surgery (radical surgery with removal of uterus, ovaries, omentum and peritoneal lining from inside the abdomen), she has recovered well from surgery and now will be planned for further cycles of chemotherapy. The cost of such surgery in a reputed cancer institute is between 5-7 lakh rupees.
Previously such patients with gynaecological cancers or suspected cancers were being referred out of state for treatment but now, at STNM Hospital are providing a comprehensive care for all gynaecological cancers and precancerous conditions ranging from screening to diagnosis to radical surgeries, radiation therapy and chemotherapy with excellent support of oncopathology services, thus reducing the cost of treatment and providing treatment within our state.
For this, I would to thank our HCM Prem Singh Tamang-Golay sir and Government of Sikkim for providing state of the art equipments required for such surgeries and I am positive that we will be supported and provided with even more sophisticated and latest equipments to help us serve the patients of our state.
I am extremely thankful to our STNM Administration, Dept of Obs and Gynae, Dept of Anaesthesiology, Dept of Oncology, Dept of Pathology, Dept of Radiology for their invaluable contribution, constant support, encouragement and guidance.
I would like to extend my gratitude to DNS, ANS, Nursing Officers and all the ancillary staffs of OT, wards, CICU, OPDs for providing the best patient care possible.
Most importantly, I thank patients and their families for their trust in our state’s healthcare care system.
