*What is Ankylosing Spondylitis?*
Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS) is a chronic inflammatory disease that primarily affects the spine, although other joints can also be involved. It causes inflammation, pain, and stiffness in the affected joints, leading to fusion and rigidity.
AS typically begins between 20-40 years old.
Men are more likely to develop AS than women.
*Symptoms:*
1. *Back pain and stiffness*: Pain and stiffness in the lower back, buttocks, and hips.
2. *Limited mobility*: Reduced flexibility and range of motion in the spine and other affected joints.
3. *Inflammation*: Swelling and redness in the affected joints.
4. Feeling tired and exhausted.
6. *Eye problems*: Inflammation in the eyes (uveitis) can occur in some cases.
7. *Digestive issues*: Some people may experience gastrointestinal symptoms like diarrhea or abdominal pain.
*Treatment and Management:*
1. *Medications*: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) inhibitors, and other biologics to manage pain and inflammation.
2. *Physical therapy*: Exercises to maintain flexibility, strength, and range of motion.
3. *Lifestyle modifications*: Maintaining a healthy weight, regular exercise, and stress management techniques like meditation or yoga.
4. *Surgery*: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to correct joint deformities or improve mobility.
