Thyroid Scan/ scintigraphy - (some findings below)

A 99mTc thyroid scan, known as a thyroid scintigraphy, is a nuclear medicine imaging technique that uses a radioactive tracer (technetium-99m pertechnetate) to visualize the thyroid gland and assess its function, helping diagnose various thyroid disorders.
What it is:
A thyroid scan uses a small amount of radioactive material (technetium-99m pertechnetate) that the thyroid gland absorbs.
How it works:
The radioactive tracer is injected intravenously, and a special camera (gamma SPECT scanner) detects the radiation emitted by the thyroid gland, creating an image.
What it helps diagnose:
- Thyroid nodules: To determine if nodules are "hot" (functioning normally) or "cold" (not functioning normally, cold nodules can be cancerous)).
- Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid): To assess thyroid function and identify the cause of hyperthyroidism.
- Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid): To evaluate thyroid function and identify the cause of hypothyroidism.
- Thyroid cancer: To help locate thyroid cancer and metastases (spread of cancer).
- Other thyroid conditions: To assess thyroid function in various other thyroid-related conditions.
Benefits:
Low radiation dose: Compared to other imaging techniques, thyroid scans with 99mTc pertechnetate offer a relatively low radiation dose.
Good image quality: The scan provides good images of the thyroid gland, allowing for detailed assessment of its structure and function.
Rapid imaging: The procedure is relatively quick, with the scan typically completed within a few hours.
Cost-effective: 99mTc pertechnetate is readily available and relatively inexpensive, making it a cost-effective imaging option.
Procedure:
Preparation: Patients are typically asked to fast for a few hours before the scan.
Injection: The radioactive tracer is injected intravenously.
Imaging: Images are taken with a gamma camera after a waiting period (usually 20 minutes) to allow the tracer to concentrate in the thyroid gland.

MRI Scan are safe because it dose-not use Ionizing Radiation. The only Disadvantage is the Sound. The loudness of an MRI scan can range from 65–130 decibels, and can be intense enough to require ear protection. Advanced MRI machines have features that reduce noise during scan. These features can make the MRI experience quieter and more comfortable for patients and Attendant. Our prices for the MRI is also reasonably low in Guwahati Metro. Radioactive Iodine-131 is the best treatment option for Uncontrolled Hyperthyroid. When treatment of hyper thyroid not responded to Anti-Thyroid drugs ( like neomarkazol) the options to cure the disease are Surgery or Radioactive Iodine Therapy. The I-131 therapy is safe, less expensive, no need for hospitalisation and can avoid complications of surgery . Therapy is given in OPD basis, patient can go back home same day with minimal Radiation safety advice. Our experience of 15 years proves 99% cure in one dose of RA Iodine.
