medications, such as antacids, contain calcium as well. Calcium intake should be 1,300 milligrams (mg) per day for adults, children, and pregnant and lactating women. Your body keeps a constant level of calcium in your blood so that your cells can function properly. Your bones are constantly breaking down and rebuilding. Before the age of 30, the rate of bone formation outpaces the rate of bone breakdown. After the age of 30, the rates reverse. This is why the elderly have more brittle bones that are more prone to fracture.
The Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) for calcium for women 19-50 years of age is 1,000 mg daily; for women 51+, 1,200 mg. For pregnant and lactating women, the RDA is 1,000 mg. For men 19-70 years of age, the RDA is 1,000 mg; for men 71+ years, 1,200 mg.
