Trigeminal neuralgia is commonest cause of facial pain. In this painful syndrome patient gets electric shock like pain on one side of face few few minutes again and again through out the day. It is also called suicidal disease.
It happens commonly due to presence of a vascular loop near the trigeminal root. this vascular loop irritates the nerve and demyelinates it. This damaged nerve send recurrent electrical shock like signals in face.
Other cases like tumors or multiple sclerosis can also cause trigeminal neuralgia which is also called secondary trigeminal neuralgia.
MRI Fiesta scan is the investigation of choice for diagnosis.
Medical management with carbamazepine or oxcarbamazepine is usually helpful to reduce patients but in some situations when pain is not getting relieved is the best non surgical pain solution for TN.
