Throughout pregnancy, it fulfills important functions: Metabolic exchanges: It promotes exchanges between fetal and maternal blood that never come into contact with each other. The fetus is connected to the placenta via the umbilical cord. The pregnant woman communicates with the placenta through blood gaps. Breathing: the placenta provides the fetus with the oxygen it needs to continue the pregnancy, removing carbon dioxide. The passage of oxygen takes place through the placentar barrier, a thin layer of cells that separates the maternal blood from the coral villas. Purification: the placenta promotes the disposal of waste substances. Immune protection: protects the fetus from the passage of viruses, bacteria and substances harmful to the health of the fetus. Nutrition: the placenta provides the fetus with the nutrients it needs to grow in a healthy way.
