"According to WHO statistics for 2011, India is the highest TB burden country with an estimated incidence of 2.2 million cases of TB out of a global incidence of 9.6 million cases."

Tuberculosis, as a disease, was an emerging concern in the early 19th century, and people began understanding its pathogenesis then. However, till date, it is a major concern and no research and no work is enough, until we actually tackle TB.

Apart from lapses in infrastructure and state machinery, the Gorakhpur tragedy has brought to the forefront the state of Public Health in our country. While many places have excellent practices in place, a large portion if the system needs to be analysed and improved.

There are just six first referral units in the whole district which has a population of nearly 45 lakhs. There is just one sick new born care unit and only three new born stabilization units in the whole district.

"2017 is the second year of a two-year "Unite to End TB" campaign for World TB Day. This year, WHO will place a special focus on uniting efforts to "Leave No One Behind", including actions to address stigma, discrimination, marginalization and overcome barriers to access care."

Tuberculosis is one of India's largest public health concerns; according to WHO's Global Tuberculosis Report 2016, India accounts for 24 per cent of all TB cases in the world.

Healthcare providers and the common man equally share the responsibility of ensuring that people with TB receive treatment and respect, alike.
