While the exact cause of multiple myeloma is unclear, certain risk factors are associated with the disease. These include age, as it's more common in older adults, male gender, African-American ethnicity, a family history of the disease, obesity, and having a history of monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance (MGUS), a benign condition that can precede multiple myeloma. Exposure to radiation or toxic chemicals may also play a role.

Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that starts in the cervix, the lower part of the uterus. It often develops slowly and may not cause symptoms in its early stages. Regular screening tests, like Pap smears and HPV vaccines, can help detect and prevent cervical cancer. Early detection and treatment are crucial for better outcomes.

2nd Saturday of the month of October is recognised and celebrated as World Hospice and Palliative Care Day (WHPCD). This year the theme is “10 years since the resolution: How are we doing?”. As this year marks 10 years since the World Health Assembly, the governing body of WHO, passed the only stand alone resolution on palliative care; “strengthen palliative care as a component of comprehensive care throughout the life course.” So, I take this day as an opportunity to advocate for People Living with Palliative Care Needs (PLWPCNs) and implement the resolution by prioritising palliative care in Universal Health Coverage (UHC). In an LMIC country like India, this “Access Abyss” can be closed by integrating palliative care in healthcare systems and focusing on policies to address unmet healthcare needs and unequal supply of pain relief medicines. Let’s act together to reduce the suffering and bring comfort to those in need and let them know that their life matters.

While specific causes of thyroid cancer are unclear, prevention strategies include avoiding undue radiation exposure, particularly in children and adolescents, maintaining a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables, and regular screening for people with high-risk factors. Genetic counseling for individuals with a family history of thyroid cancer is also recommended.
