INSULIN RESISTANCE !!!!
Insulin resistance is a complex condition where your body’s cells don’t respond effectively to insulin, a hormone produced by the pancreas that regulates blood sugar levels ¹. This can lead to high blood sugar levels, and if left untreated, can progress to prediabetes and type 2 diabetes.
Causes of Insulin Resistance:-
- Genetic factors: Family history and certain genetic conditions can contribute to insulin resistance.
- Obesity: Excess body fat, particularly around the belly, can lead to insulin resistance.
- Physical inactivity: A sedentary lifestyle can contribute to insulin resistance.
- Diet_: Consuming a diet high in processed foods, sugar, and saturated fats can increase the risk of insulin resistance.
- Certain medications: Steroids, certain blood pressure medications, and some psychiatric medications can contribute to insulin resistance.
Symptoms of Insulin Resistance:-
- Increased thirst and hunger
- Frequent urination
- Blurred vision
- Headaches
- Vaginal and skin infections
- Slow-healing cuts and sores
Diagnosing Insulin Resistance:-
Insulin resistance can be difficult to diagnose, as there are no specific symptoms until it progresses to prediabetes or type 2 diabetes. Healthcare providers may use blood tests, such as the glycated hemoglobin (A1c) test, to diagnose insulin resistance.
Treatment and Management:
- Lifestyle modifications : Eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and losing excess weight can help improve insulin sensitivity.
- Medications : While there are no medications specifically designed to treat insulin resistance, medications like metformin may be prescribed to manage related conditions like type 2 diabetes.
It’s essential to work with a healthcare provider to develop a personalized treatment plan and prevent complications associated with insulin resistance.
