🏥 Pediatric Orthopedic Alert: Lateral Condyle Fractures
Accidents happen—especially with active teens and budding athletes here in gorakhpur. One of the most common yet “tricky” elbow injuries we see in the adolescent population is the Lateral Condyle Humerus Fracture.
🔍 Why is this fracture different?
Unlike a simple “crack,” a lateral condyle fracture involves the growth plate and the joint surface. Because this area is under constant tension from the forearm muscles, these fractures are notorious for:
• Non-union: Failing to heal on their own.
• Mal-union: Healing at an angle that causes future elbow deformity (Cubitus Valgus).
• Growth Disturbance: Affecting the long-term development of the arm.
⚖️ When is Surgery Necessary?
While minor hairline shifts can sometimes be managed in a cast, surgery is often the “Gold Standard” for adolescents when:
1. Displacement is >2mm: Even a tiny gap can prevent the bone from knitting back together.
2. Joint Instability: Ensuring the elbow surface is perfectly smooth to prevent early-onset arthritis.
3. Rotation: If the bone fragment has twisted, it won’t heal without internal fixation.
🛠️ The Fix: Open Reduction & Internal Fixation (ORIF)
Using precision imaging, we realign the bone and secure it—usually with specialized pins or screws. This ensures the growth plate is protected and the teen can get back to sports with full range of motion.
