Radiation therapy is a noninvasive, painless cancer treatment that uses high-energy rays to damage the DNA in cancer cells. Depending on the type and stage of cancer, it may be used to cure the cancer, or to relieve symptoms or as an add on to other treatments to make them more effective.

Understanding the stages of cancer
Whenever a person is presented with a diagnosis of cancer, the first question they ask the oncologist is "What is the stage of cancer?"
For most cancers, 4 stages of cancer are defined. The staging depends on the size of the tumor, the extent of the tumor, that is, whether there is involvement of lymph nodes or adjacent areas, and thirdly whether the cancer has affected other parts of the body
Stage 1: It is also called early stage cancer. The size of the cancerous mass is small and disease has not spread to lymph nodes or other tissues.
Stage 2: Cancerous mass is larger than what could be classifies as stage 1, or when the tumor has spread to tissue close to the mass or to few lymph nodes.
Stage 3: Tumor has grown more than in stage 2 and has spread to more lymph nodes that are a little further away from the tumor or there is greater involvement of nearby tissue
Stage 4: Cancer has spread to other tissues or organs when it is said to be 'metastatic'.
However, not all cancers are staged this way. Some cancers like brain tumors do not spread to lymph nodes or to the rest of the body, so they don’t follow a staging system. Instead, the treatment for brain tumors depends on the 'grade' of the tumor which is an indicator of how aggressive or infiltrative the tumor is. Cancers of blood and bone marrow also don’t follow this kind of staging because they are a systemic disease.

Cancer diagnosis can be a scary thing- both for the patient and their friends and family. But recent advances have changed the way cancer is treated- making therapy more targeted, personalized and hence more effective.
Radiation therapy uses high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells so they cannot grow, multiply or spread. When you undergo external radiation, each session is painless, just like getting an X-ray. Treatment is carefully planned to do as little harm as possible to the normal body tissue near the cancer.
Dr Gupta specialises in the treatment of cancer using radiation and has extensive training in use of advanced techniques like IMRT, IGRT, SRS and SBRT from Tata Memorial Hospital, Mumbai.
