Indian summers are not just hot—they’re relentless! As temperatures soar past 40°C, it becomes essential to nourish our bodies with foods that cool, hydrate, and energize. Thankfully, our desi diet is a treasure trove of summer-friendly delights that do just that.
What to Eat:�Choose naturally cooling foods like cucumber, watermelon, muskmelon, buttermilk, coconut water, mint, curd, and sabja (basil) seeds. These not only lower body heat but also provide essential vitamins and antioxidants to combat oxidative stress caused by sun exposure. Seasonal fruits like mango (in moderation), jamun, and lychee are rich in fibre and hydration.
Light dals, khichdi, and steamed or sautéed vegetables keep digestion smooth and avoid the bloated feeling heavier meals may bring. Incorporating cooling grains like barley and millets is also beneficial.
What to Drink:�Hydration is non-negotiable! Start your day with jeera or fennel seed water to enhance digestion. Sip on aam panna, sattu drink, chaas, nimbu-pani, and fresh coconut water throughout the day. Avoid sugary sodas, energy drinks, and excessive caffeine—they dehydrate and do more harm than good in the heat.
What to Avoid:�Stay away from spicy, fried, and processed foods as they increase body heat and may lead to dehydration. Also, minimize alcohol and caffeine intake as they act as diuretics and sap your body's water content.
