Migraines vs. Other Headaches: When to See a Neurologist

Headaches are among the most common health complaints, but not all headaches are the same. While tension headaches and sinus headaches are usually temporary and manageable with simple remedies, migraines are a neurological condition that requires deeper attention. Migraines often come with intense throbbing pain, usually on one side of the head, and may be accompanied by nausea, sensitivity to light or sound, and visual disturbances.

In contrast, tension headaches typically cause a dull, tight pain around the forehead or back of the head, and sinus headaches are linked to sinus infections, often worsened by leaning forward. Unlike these, migraines can significantly interfere with daily life and may last from hours to days.

You should consider seeing a neurologist if you experience frequent headaches that don’t respond to over-the-counter medication, severe head pain with neurological symptoms like vision changes, numbness, or difficulty speaking, or sudden onset of the “worst headache of your life.” A neurologist can help identify triggers, rule out serious causes, and provide targeted treatment options.

Timely evaluation can make a crucial difference—ensuring that what seems like “just a headache” doesn’t mask a more serious underlying problem.

Tingling or Numb Hands? It Might Be a Nerve Issue — Not Just Posture

If you often wake up with tingling or numb hands, you might blame poor posture or sleeping in an awkward position. While that can be a cause, persistent or recurring symptoms could indicate a nerve-related problem.

Nerves in your neck, shoulder, or wrist can become compressed or irritated, disrupting the signals between your brain and hands. Common causes include carpal tunnel syndrome, cervical spine issues (like a slipped disc), or nerve entrapment in the arm. Conditions such as diabetes or vitamin B12 deficiency can also damage nerves, leading to these sensations.

Ignoring ongoing tingling or numbness is risky — it could lead to permanent nerve damage and muscle weakness. Early signs may be intermittent, but over time, they can become constant, affecting your grip and hand function.

A doctor may recommend nerve conduction tests, physical therapy, lifestyle adjustments, or, in severe cases, surgery. Managing underlying conditions and avoiding repetitive strain can prevent worsening symptoms.

If your hand tingling lasts more than a few days, recurs often, or is accompanied by weakness or pain, it’s time to seek medical advice. Early diagnosis ensures better treatment and protects long-term nerve health.
