Dementia is a decline in cognitive function that affects memory, thinking, language, judgment, and behavior. The symptoms of dementia can vary depending on the type of dementia and the stage of the disease, but some common symptoms include:
Memory loss: Difficulty remembering recent events, conversations, or the names of familiar people or objects.
Difficulty with language: Struggling to find the right words or understand spoken or written language.
Disorientation: Getting lost in familiar places or having trouble keeping track of time and seasons.
Difficulty with daily tasks: Struggling to perform everyday activities such as cooking, shopping, or managing finances.
Changes in mood and behavior: becoming more withdrawn, apathetic, or experiencing mood swings and personality changes.
Impairment of judgment: making poor decisions or taking unnecessary risks.
Difficulty with spatial awareness: having problems with balance, coordination, and depth perception.
Misplacing things: Putting things in unusual places, losing things, and being unable to retrace steps to find them.
It is important to note that some of these symptoms may be normal as part of the aging process, but when they occur together and interfere with daily life, it may be a sign of dementia. If you are concerned about your memory or thinking skills, it is important to talk to your doctor for a proper evaluation.
