World Su***de Prevention Day 2023
10 September

Su***de is a major public health problem with far-reaching social, emotional and economic consequences. It is estimated that there are currently more than 700 000 su***des per year worldwide, and we know that each su***de profoundly affects many more people.

“Creating Hope Through Action” is the triennial theme for the World Su***de Prevention Day from 2021-2023.

This theme serves as a powerful call to action and reminder that there is an alternative to su***de and that through our actions we can encourage hope and strengthen prevention.

By creating hope through action, we can signal to people experiencing suicidal thoughts that there is hope and that we care and want to support them. It also suggests that our actions, no matter how big or small, may provide hope to those who are struggling.

Lastly, it serves as a reminder that su***de prevention is a public health priority and urgent action is required to make sure su***de mortality rates are reduced.

World Su***de Prevention Day (WSPD) was established in 2003 by the International Association for Su***de Prevention in conjunction with the World Health Organization (WHO). The 10 September each year aims to focus attention on the issue, reduces stigma and raises awareness among organizations, governments, and the public, giving a singular message that su***des are preventable.

Mental health awareness video on eve of world mental health day 10/10/2022,

10/10/2022

In India, around 14 crore population suffer from psychiatric morbidity, 1 crore population have one or another form of severe mental illness.

Most common mental illness noted in the general population are Depression, Anxiety disorder, Schizophrenia, Alcohol and other substance use disorder, Stress related disorder, Sleep disorders, Bipolar disorder, Suicidal ideation and attempts, Childhood mental health disorders, and many others. The state of mental health has been questioned in many ways;

Additionally, prior to the pandemic in 2019, an estimated 1 in 8 people worldwide had a mental illness. At the same time, there is still a lack of mental health services, skills, and funding, especially in India, where they are far below what is needed. The COVID-19 pandemic has created a global crisis for mental health, fuelling short- and long-term stresses and undermining the mental health of millions. Since covid and post covid period there has been 25% increase in depression and anxiety disorders, around 10 % increase in su***de rates.

In India Treatment gap for mental illness is around 70% i.e. 70% of people suffering from mental illness don’t seek treatment hence this year theme “Make mental health and wellbeing for all- A Global Priority” as we need to acknowledge that ‘No Health is without Mental Health’.

We must strengthen mental health care so that the full spectrum of mental health needs is met through a community-based network of accessible, affordable and quality services and supports. We envision a world in which mental health is valued, promoted and protected; where everyone has an equal opportunity to enjoy mental health and to exercise their human rights; and where everyone can get the necessary mental health care.
