PMDD is not just PMS on Steroids, it's a serious mental illness.
PMDD affects up to 5-8% of menstruating and can have a major impact on your quality of life.
Trying to figure out if you have PMDD? Here are some questions you might ask yourself:
- Does my period cause more than cramping, bleeding, and bloating?
- Is my period and/or the days leading up to it affecting my job, quality of life, or my relationships?
- Are my mood swings so intense that I am suddenly very sad and teary, feeling hopeless, thinking about su***de, or do I become angry and lash out at others?
- Does this feel like something more than PMS?
Despite its prevalence, there are still a lot of myths and misconceptions about PMDD. Let's dispel some of the most common ones:
Myth 1: PMDD is just PMS on steroids
PMS and PMDD are two different conditions. PMDD is a severe form of PMS that is characterized by debilitating physical and emotional symptoms. PMS, on the other hand, is a more common condition that affects most menstruating people to some degree. While the symptoms of PMS can be bothersome, they typically don't interfere with everyday life.
Myth 2: PMDD is all in your head
PMDD is a real, medical condition. It is not simply a "case of the blues" or something that you can just snap out of. PMDD is caused by a complex interaction of hormones and brain chemicals, and it is not something that you can control.
Myth 2: PMDD is just PMS with a few extra symptoms
The symptoms of PMDD are much more severe than the symptoms of PMS.
