Spinach is not the best source of iron! 'Popeye the sailor man' k time se hume ye lagta aaraha hai iron matlab spinach. We still think it is the best source of iron for vegetarians. But hum yaha galat hain.

An average man and women above age 51 need 8 mg of iron per day, whereas women below 51 years need 18 mg iron in a day (for the lost blood during menstrual cycle). Therefore, it is important to recognize seasonal and easily-available options that are actually rich sources of iron.

So, what is the best source of iron according to you, we are not listening to Popeye here!
We did our own research and found out that rajma or kidney beans contain more iron than spinach! A 100 g of raw spinach contains 2.71 mg iron. On the other hand, rajma contains 8.2 mg iron of the same amount!

WHY IS SPINACH NOT A GREAT SOURCE OF IRON?

Spinach contains iron to a good extent but it also contains the antinutrient- Oxalic acid which inhibits the absorption of iron in the body. But according to research, soluble oxalic acid can be reduced from 30-87% after boiling.

BUT WHAT ABOUT ANTINUTRIENTS IN RAW RAJMA?

Although raw, uncooked kidney beans contain phytic acid. It is an antinutrient that impairs or blocks the absorption of iron and other minerals like zinc, calcium, magnesium, chromium and manganese in the body. But no one eats uncooked rajma, right? So, this problem can be easily solved by soaking and cooking the rajma properly.

Here is another way we consume rajma that increases iron absorption in the body. Rajma making involves addition of onion and garlic to it. Both of these improve the absorption of iron drastically.

HOW CAN YOU MAXIMISE YOUR IR0N INTAKE?

• Pair iron-rich foods with foods rich in Vitamin C.
• Avoid taking calcium-rich foods with iron-rich foods.

Homemade baby food as it is not processed as that from a jar/canned so retains more nutrients. Processed or Jarred/canned baby foods can be thickened with ingredients like starches to preserve and bulk them up but lack flavor. Homemade meals are easy to adapt for your weaning baby.

If you are considering buying a jar of baby food, think again! Homemade baby food means only paying for the ingredients you use; no manufacturing or packaging costs. By offering an adapted version of your family meal to suit their weaning stage, your baby won’t have to reach for your plate because they have their portion. Including your tot in family meal-time will make them more enjoyable too.

Whenever we think of a healthier lifestyle, the first thing we take out of our system is SUGAR.

One thing you do whether you have diabetes or trying to get in shape- Artificial sweeteners are the go-to option for most of us, and we utilise them as a healthy alternative without compromising on our taste buds. It is not surprising that sugar-free is the bestseller on Amazon. A lot of you were asking us to share our views on sugar-free.

So we went ahead and compared sugar-free with our traditional shakkar and what we found was SHOCKING !!

On the front-most label of Sugar-free, it is written that it has zero calories in it, but if you look behind, the nutritional brand, 1.9Kcals, is mentioned in 0.5gm of sugar-free. If we compare sugar-free with our traditional shakkar, 100gms of sugar-free has 390 Kcals while 100gms of shakkar has 385 Kcals. If we talk about carbs, sugar-free is having 100gms, whereas shakkar has 98gms of carbs.

OKAY, NOW YOU WILL ASK ONLY 1/5 OF THE SUGAR-FREE IS USED AS COMPARED TO CONVENTIONAL SUGAR, SO ISNT IT HEALTHY?

NO, sugar-free doesn't have any nutritional value. It is highly processed, whereas our traditional shakkar is rich in iron, magnesium, and calcium. Some of the side effects of sugar-free are :

Bad for your digestion: Yes, it is now proven that excessive use of Artificial sweeteners can significantly affect your gut health. A study finds that when consumed for as little as two weeks, common alternatives to sugar affect intestinal bacterial communities, with some reducing the body's ability to regulate blood glucose levels.
May increase the appetite: If you've switched from sugar to an artificial sweetener made from sucralose as part of a weight-loss strategy, a new study has concerning news, Artificial sweeteners may increase appetite in women and people with obesity.

BOTTOMLINE :

A year ago, hardly any research papers were there to prove that Artificial Sugars are bad, but during the last few years, we have had new research that suggests that it may have some negative impact on your health. Until we have any conclusive evidence, Please don't take such Zero cal option for granted.

DARK CHOCOLATE COMPOUND is used in all the bakeries and confectioneries to make yummy cakes🎂, puddings, pies🥧, muffins, pastries🍰, pancakes and what not!
Just imagine the calories and sugar going in your body😳. Aur keval chocolate to khaoge nahi, sath me uske bread🥖 bhi hogi, which is again made from refined flour and sugar! Not to forget, the icing, cherries🍒, chocolate sauce etc on the cake that add to the calories, fat and sugar part!🥹

We did our own research📝 and found out that a stick kulfi is typically of 60 g. So, if we compare 60 g of the Indian delicacy kulfi😋 with the same amount of dark compound chocolate, we get a huuuuuuge calorie difference of 274 calories!
That's an insane figure!😵‍💫

IS A COMPOUND OF CHOCOLATE THAT BAD?

A compound of Dark Chocolate is made up of everything but dark chocolate! 😏

1) SUGAR

Guess the primary component in dark chocolate compound🤔? We bet you would say its Dark Chocolate🥺! But no! Its sugar!🤓

60 g compound of dark chocolate contains 30.24 g sugar!😭
Kulfi on the other hand has just 4.68 g sugar.😋

2) EDIBLE VEGETABLE FAT

The dark chocolate compound contains hydrogenated vegetable oils🛢️ which are harmful for heart🫀 health, taking the total fat content to a dangerous☠️ figure of 21.66 g per 60 g. If we talk about a stick of kulfi, it contains just 3.78 g fat!

3) COCOA SOLIDS

The part that remains after cocoa butter is extracted- Cocoa solids, the characteristic ingredient, the most important part😈 of chocolate comes third in the ingredient list! 😟

4) EMULSIFIERS 492, 332

Market wali KULFI on the other hand has milk solids followed by sugar, and nuts like cashews, almonds🌰 and pistachios.

Although it also contains emulsifiers and stabilizers, synthetic food colour and added flavour. So, we won’t say it’s the best choice,🥹 but its still much much better than a compound of dark chocolate.😋
