🧠 ANTI-DRUG-DAY

🤔Addiction is a Brain Disease – Not a Weakness

Is addiction just a bad habit? No — it’s a disorder of the brain.

Whether it’s drugs, alcohol, gaming, or even social media —
addiction is driven by the brain’s dopamine-based reward system,
which compels individuals to repeat behaviors that give temporary pleasure.

🔬 While counseling and medication help many —
neuroscience now offers new hope for severe cases.

🧠 Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a breakthrough neurosurgical technique
that targets the brain’s reward centers to reduce cravings and dependency in drug-resistant addiction.

🩺 Dr. Himanshu Champaneri,
Consultant Neurosurgeon (Functional & Epilepsy Surgery),
explains how modern brain science is changing the way we treat addiction.

Let’s break the stigma, understand the science, and support recovery with compassion.

🧠 Understanding Epilepsy & Its Surgical Treatment – By Dr. Himanshu Champaneri

At
The 4th Meeting of the Young Neurosurgeons Forum of the Neurological Society of India

Speaker: Dr. Himanshu Champaneri – Functional and Epilepsy Neurosurgeon

🩺 Presentation Overview:

1. What is Epilepsy?

Epilepsy is a brain disorder where nerve cell activity becomes disturbed.

This causes seizures – which can be jerking movements, loss of awareness, or unusual behavior.

It's a neurological condition, not a mental illness.

👉 Imagine a short circuit in the brain – that’s what a seizure is.

2. What is Drug-Resistant Epilepsy (DRE)?

Most epilepsy patients get relief from medicines.

But 30–40% of patients don’t respond to medicines.
➤ This condition is called Drug-Resistant Epilepsy (DRE).

💊 How do you know if it's DRE?

If seizures continue even after trying two proper anti-seizure medications, it’s drug-resistant.

3. Why Surgery is Needed in DRE:

When medicines fail, surgery becomes the best hope.

Surgery doesn’t mean open-brain surgery in all cases – there are many modern, less invasive techniques.

The goal is: Stop seizures OR Reduce their frequency and improve the patient’s life.

🔍 Dr. Himanshu’s Slide: Surgical Treatment Approaches

Dr. Himanshu explained 3 main types of epilepsy surgeries:

✅ 1. Resection / Disconnection

This is the main surgical treatment for DRE.

The part of the brain causing seizures is either:

Removed (resection)

Disconnected from other brain areas

Best for focal epilepsy (where the seizure starts in one area).

✅ 2. Lesioning (Stereotactic Surgery)

If seizure origin is deep inside the brain, where open surgery isn’t safe…

Stereotactic lesioning is used:
➤ A focused beam or electrode burns that area.

Very precise, safe, and less invasive.

✅ 3. Neuromodulation Devices

If surgery isn’t possible, then use implanted devices:

VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation)

DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation)

RNS (Responsive Neurostimulation)

These devices send controlled signals to the brain to prevent seizures.

🎯 Main Message Dr. Himanshu Delivered:

> "Epilepsy is curable in many cases – especially Drug-Resistant ones – with proper surgical evaluation and modern techniques."

📣 Why This is Important for Social Media:

This isn’t just a conference update – it’s an awareness message:

Many epilepsy patients don’t know surgery can help.

People fear brain surgery, but modern methods are safe & effective.

Parents of kids with epilepsy, or adults with uncontrolled seizures, should know they have hope beyond medicines.

🧠 Cerebral Aneurysm Clipping – Life-saving Precision in Neurosurgery

📍 Diagnosis: Cerebral aneurysm
📍 Location: Internal carotid artery bifurcation (see angiogram circled image)
📍 Treatment: Microsurgical clipping
📍 Result: Aneurysm excluded from circulation with intact surrounding vessels

🔍 What is an Aneurysm?
An aneurysm is a weak, bulging spot in the wall of a brain artery. Over time, it can enlarge and rupture — causing life-threatening bleeding in the brain (subarachnoid hemorrhage).

🔍 What is Aneurysm Clipping?
Aneurysm clipping is a highly precise microsurgical technique where a titanium clip is placed across the neck of the aneurysm to permanently seal it off — preventing rupture or rebleed.

✅ Why Clipping?
• Definite cure
• Prevents future rupture
• Ideal for accessible aneurysms
• Best suited for young patients or wide-neck aneurysms

🔐 Performed by expert hands using PENTERO 900 neurosurgical microscope for unmatched precision.

Chronic Back Pain: A Silent Threat to Your Spine
Back pain is one of the most common health complaints worldwide—but what many people don't realize is that chronic back pain isn't just a symptom; it can also be a sign of underlying spinal degeneration that silently progresses over time.

🧠 A Real Case: 10 Years of Silent Damage, We recently treated a patient who had suffered from persistent lower back pain for over a decade. Despite the discomfort, the patient had not undergone any advanced evaluation or treatment. When they finally came to us, imaging studies including MRI and X-ray revealed advanced spinal degeneration, including disc collapse, instability, and facet joint damage.

To restore spinal stability and relieve pain, we performed a spinal stabilization surgery using pedicle screws and rods. Postoperatively, the patient reported complete pain relief and restoration of mobility and daily function.

🚨 The Takeaway: Chronic Pain = Progressive Degeneration
Chronic pain isn’t just “in your head” or something to “get used to.” Persistent mechanical back pain often points to:

Degenerative disc disease
Facet joint arthritis
Vertebral instability
Nerve compression
Over time, these changes worsen silently and may lead to permanent nerve or structural damage if left untreated.

🕐 Early Diagnosis = Better Outcomes
Early medical attention can slow, stop, or even reverse degenerative changes before they become disabling. Non-surgical treatments, physiotherapy, pain management, or timely surgical intervention—like spinal stabilization—can make a life-changing difference.

✅ What You Should Do
Don’t ignore back pain that lasts longer than 6 weeks.
Seek evaluation if pain disrupts your sleep, work, or mobility.
Ask for imaging (MRI/X-ray) if conservative treatments fail.
Your spine is your body’s foundation. Protect it by taking action early.
If you or someone you know is living with chronic back pain, consult a spine specialist today. The sooner you act, the better your chances of full recovery.

🧠 Stereotactic Brain Surgery – Precision in Action
This is not just surgery — it’s neuroscience at its most accurate.

📍 What is it?
Stereotactic brain surgery uses 3D imaging and a rigid frame to precisely target deep brain structures. It’s used to treat movement disorders, epilepsy, pain and psychiatric disorders. Functional neurological disorders like Parkinson disease Dystonia tremors epilepsy

📍 Case Summary
A patient with severe cervical dystonia underwent a frame-based stereotactic Pallidotomy, performed under local anesthesia (awake).
Target: Left internal globus pallidus (GPi) – a well-established target in dystonia surgery.

🧲 Post-op MRI confirms:
A perfectly placed lesion, exactly where it should be. The precision of stereotactic ensures maximum benefit with minimal disruption.

✨ This is the power of modern neurosurgery — restoring function, relieving suffering, and transforming lives.

🤔What’s neuromodulation and why is it important

🧠 Meditation: The Most Natural & Powerful Form of Neuromodulation

🔍 What is Neuromodulation?

Neuromodulation refers to the process of altering brain activity through targeted stimulation. While conventional methods often involve invasive devices or pharmaceuticals, there's a powerful, natural alternative that requires no machines or medication:

✨ Meditation — Your Brain’s Inner Technology

Unlike external tools, meditation empowers you to rewire your brain from within. Backed by growing neuroscience research, it offers a safe, non-invasive, and evidence-based method of neuromodulation.

---

🧬 How Meditation Affects the Brain

✅ 1. Reduces Activity in the Default Mode Network (DMN)

The DMN is associated with self-referential thoughts, overthinking, and rumination. Meditation helps quiet this network, leading to decreased stress, anxiety, and mental fatigue.

✅ 2. Promotes Beneficial Brainwaves

Meditation enhances alpha and theta brainwaves, which are linked to relaxed focus, deep creativity, and emotional calm.

✅ 3. Improves Emotional Regulation via Neuroplasticity

Consistent practice boosts neuroplasticity — the brain’s ability to rewire itself — helping you build emotional resilience and better stress response.

✅ 4. Enhances Cognitive Functions

Regular meditation is shown to improve memory, clarity, and overall cognitive performance — without side effects or dependency.

---

🧘‍♂️ A Clinician’s Perspective

> "As a clinician, I’ve seen how powerful meditation can be—not just as a lifestyle habit, but as a clinically relevant, non-pharmacological tool for neuromodulation. Even 10 minutes a day can create meaningful changes in brain function and mental well-being."

---

🌿 The Bottom Line

Your breath is your remote control.
Meditation is the signal.

In a world of overstimulation, meditation offers a grounded, effective, and sustainable way to optimize your brain.

> Start small. Stay consistent. Let your brain experience its full potential — naturally.
