"STRETCH MARKS IN PREGNANCY"

Stretch marks are a common annoyance during pregnancy.
These are narrow streaks that appear on the abdomen, breast, hips, buttocks and thighs during pregnancy, especially during the last trimester of pregnancy.
They are not painful or harmful but we don't like the way they make our skin look

Why do they occur ?

1) During the pregnancy, whenever there is a rapid weight gain, there is massive stretching of skin .This causes elastic fibres just under the surface of skin (dermis) to break at places leading to appearance of these stretch marks.
2) Hormonal changes occurring in pregnancy affect these elastic fibres, softening them leading to easy breakage.
3) More likely to happen if the weight gain in pregnancy is much more than average gain and also if there is rapid gain.
4) Proper hydration, if not maintained, also leads to greater tendency to formation of these marks.
5) If before pregnancy, you have not been into the practice of regular exercises, then the elasticity of your skin is low leading to increased chances of getting stretch marks.
6) Finally, there's always a genetic predisposition as well.
7) As we age, our skin's natural collagen and elastin levels begin to decline, losing its firmness, flexibility and so increased chances of breaks in elastin fibres.

Why do they itch ?

Fresh stretch marks itch a lot as skin is thinner and has less collagen support .Also dermal tears harm the nerves.Once the skin starts healing, the damaged nerves are stimulated, causing itching sensation

Is prevention possible ?

They start out as reddish or purplish streaks and later fade to white or gray
Unfortunately, there is no way to prevent them from appearing but we can do certain things to minimize their appearance. Also, the best chance of reducing stretch marks is before their appearance.

1) Certain oils like cocoa butter, almond oil, olive oil have anti inflammatory and antioxidant properties.Regular massage with these will keep skin hydrated and promote skin healing and skin barrier repair. They also help maintain the skin's elasticity, making it less likely to tear.
2) Nourish your skin from inside. Keep taking prenatal vitamins.
3) Include lots of vitamin C in your diet. Have lots of oranges, sweet lime, lemon, amla, kiwi etc in your diet
4) Vitamin E is also a very good antioxidant. Include dark green leafy vegetables in your diet
5) Aim to gain weight slowly and steadily.

After delivery :

These stretch marks would slowly fade .lf they bother you too much, you can take help from a qualified dermatologist who can help you with various modalities like
1) Creams containing retinol A for local application.
2) Skin peeling
3) Laser

"URINARY TRACT INFECTION"

Did you ever feel the burning sensation or stinging while passing urine ?

Did you ever feel an uncontrollable urge to pass urine and when you go only a little urine comes out.

If yes, you probably had a urinary tract infection or what is commonly called by us as UTI.

So , let's talk about UTI today :
1) It is very common and everyone has had it at least once.
2) It is more common in females as they have a shorter urethra, so chances of an ascending infection are more as compared to males.
Also, because of the shorter distance between va**na and urethra, chances of infection are high.

What are the symptoms or how would you know that you have UTI.
You can have one or more of following symptoms :
1) Pain while passing urine
2) Increased frequency of urination, that is, wanting to go again and again to pass urine, and only a small amount coming out.
3) Fever with chills
4) Pain/ discomfort/ heaviness in lower abdomen
5) In severe cases there might be blood in urine

Let's understand the reason of UTI :
In women, common reasons are:
1) sexual activity
2) decreased fluid intake
3) any stone in urinary tract
4) diabetes mellitus

- UTI can be treated very easily, provided you take the right treatment at the right time. But never self-treat.
- First and foremost, as soon as you feel even minute symptoms, get a urine routine and culture done. And then take antibiotics according to the report.Be sure to take a complete course of medicine.
- Many times as relief occurs within 2 days of medication, one tends to stop the medicine, but due to incomplete course the bacteria tends to regrow after some days and might also become resistant to the medicine given.

What can be done to prevent getting UTI :

1) DIET
- Some foods irritate the bladder and increase the symptoms of UTI, like alcohol, tomato based food, spicy food, artificial sweeteners, garlic etc.

- Increase vitamin C in your diet. It makes the urine acidic and kills bacteria to some extent.
- Increase fluid intake. Aim for a daily intake of 2-3 litres of water
- Avoid too much tea and coffee as these are dehydrating agents.
- Include cranberry juice / cranberry extract capsules in your diet. Substances in cranberry prevent urinary infection by inhibiting the bacterium from attaching to the mucosal lining of the urinary tract.
2) Achieve good control over diabetes
3) Treat any underlying stone in the urinary tract.
4) Toilet / hygiene habits
- Do not hold urine for a long time as concentrated urine increases the growth of bacteria.
- Clean perineal area front to back
- Pass urine before and after sexual activity
- Avoid overuse of va**nal washes
- Avoid tight fitting clothes for a long time.
- Use cotton undergarments
