Kidney stone pain is often described as one of the most severe and unbearable pains a person can experience—but why does it hurt so much?
In this video, Dr. Nitin Shrivastava, explains the medical reason behind renal colic, the intense pain caused when a kidney stone gets stuck in the ureter.
The ureter is a muscular, hollow tube responsible for pushing urine from the kidney to the bladder. When a stone blocks this passage, the ureter muscles contract forcefully in an attempt to push the stone forward. These repeated muscle spasms, along with swelling of the kidney, lead to extreme cramping pain known as renal colic.
Understanding the cause of kidney stone pain helps in early diagnosis and timely treatment. If you experience severe flank pain, nausea, or difficulty passing urine, consult a urology specialist without delay to prevent complications.
