Emergency Splenectomy for Ruptured Splenic Neoplasm – Case Report

Patient: Ivy, GSD ,female ,8yr
Presentation:Ivy was presented in lateral recumbancy with complete anorexia since 2 days,
history and clinical signs consistent with splenic neoplasm rupture and hemoabdomen. On presentation, the patient was laterally recumbent, obtunded, and demonstrated clinical evidence of hypovolemic shock, including weakness and poor perfusion.

Focused abdominal assessment and diagnostic imaging findings were consistent with a ruptured splenic mass with free intraperitoneal hemorrhage. Due to the life-threatening nature of the condition, immediate surgical intervention was elected.

Preoperative Management

The patient was stabilized with:
• Rapid intravenous crystalloid therapy
• Oxygen supplementation
• Analgesia and supportive care
Blood products were prepared due to the high risk of ongoing hemorrhage.

Surgical Procedure

A ventral midline celiotomy was performed. Upon entering the abdominal cavity, a significant volume of free blood (hemoabdomen) was encountered. The spleen was exteriorized, revealing a ruptured splenic neoplasm with active hemorrhage.

A total splenectomy was performed using standard ligation techniques of the splenic vessels. Hemostasis was achieved, and the abdominal cavity was thoroughly explored for evidence of additional bleeding or metastatic lesions. The abdomen was lavaged with warm sterile saline and closed routinely in layers.

How Advanced Periodontitis Leads to Stomatitis

Periodontitis develops when plaque and tartar accumulate under the gumline and cause infection. As the disease progresses:
• Bacteria invade deeper tissues around the tooth roots
• Immune reactions become more severe
• The body begins attacking both bacteria and healthy tissue

This uncontrolled inflammation can extend throughout the mouth, leading to stomatitis. In some dogs, the body’s immune system becomes hypersensitive to dental plaque, causing a cycle of pain and inflammation.

Common Signs of Stomatitis in Dogs

Dogs often hide oral pain, so early symptoms can be subtle. As the disease progresses, pet owners may notice:
• Severe bad breath
• Drooling, sometimes with blood
• Reluctance to eat, especially dry food
• Pawing at the mouth or face
• Red, swollen, or ulcerated gums
• Weight loss
• Behavioral changes such as irritability
• Loose or missing teeth

From Pain to Shine: The Inspiring Recovery of a Once–Street Dog

When we first found her wandering the streets, she was a heartbreaking sight. Her body was covered in severe skin lesions, open wounds, and bleeding patches. She had lost most of her fur, and her entire body itched so intensely that she could barely rest. Every scratch, every whimper, and every step she took showed how much she had suffered—alone, hungry, and in constant pain.

But beneath the wounded skin and frightened eyes was a gentle soul waiting for help.

We rescued her and immediately began a long and challenging course of treatment. She required good medical attention with lots of love. Some days were tough—her progress was slow, and her body needed time to heal after months of neglect and infection. But she never gave up.

And today… her transformation is nothing short of miraculous.

Her skin has completely healed.
Her fur has grown back thick, soft, and beautifully shining.
She is active, playful, and full of life—finally experiencing the comfort, safety, and affection she always deserved.

Her journey reminds us that every street dog deserves a chance, and with compassion, veterinary care, and patience, even the most broken animals can make the most incredible comebacks.

Now she is Akira
One of most loving kid in our family .

Akira is living proof that love heals ❤️
