The story of India’s FIRST triple-swap liver transplant:

6 surgeries simultaneously over 12 hrs with a team of 55 doctors & paramedics

3 months ago—Sanjeev, Saurabh & Aadesh were complete strangers. Each terminally ill with liver failure, needing a transplant to survive…

Little did they know, their destinies were closely intertwined. All had willing donors within the family but none were suitable to donate.

While Saurabh’s (wife) & Aadesh’s (son) donors blood groups were incompatible, Sanjeev’s donor’s (wife) liver was too small for him…

For the first time ever, we used something called a “paired exchange liver swap protocol” on the 3 families.

By exchanging their donor livers, the three patients were all able to have successful liver transplants…

This is a huge leap in improving access to liver transplants, as this concept could potentially increase the living liver donor pool by 30%!

Medanta, in partnership with ‘Doctors for Clean Air and Climate Action’, launched the Medanta Institute of Research and Advocacy for Clean Air and Health (MIRACAH) with an objective to work towards advocacy, training and research on air pollution and health. The goal is to engage with patients in order to highlight the importance of clean air, and conduct in-house and community-based research on these issues. This is a pan-India initiative across all Medanta hospitals and our nationwide network of out-patient clinics. The institute was launched at Medanta, Gurugram, in the presence of Dr. Naresh Trehan (Chairman and MD), Dr. Arvind Kumar (Chairman, Institute of Chest Surgery- Chest Onco Surgery and Lung Transplantation), and Ms. Jane Burston (Executive Director, Clean Air Fund).
