Infantile Spasm Awareness Week - 1-7th December

Infantile spasms or West Syndrome is a neurological emergency and has seizures which can be easily missed by parents and caregivers.
Sudden shock like movements, forward or backward jerking / bending, head drops sometimes as subtle as upward jerky eye movements.
It can lead to delay or regressions of the infant’s milestones particularly social milestones.

It needs urgent attention and treatment to avoid the developmental impact of this devastating epilepsy.

Infant / children at risk are those with history of NICU / nursery admission at birth, prematurity, hypoxia (low oxygen)seizures at birth, low sugar at birth, developmental malformations of brain, genetic and metabolic conditions and more.

Let’s educate ourselves to recognise symptoms early, so that any child with infantile spasms gets urgent attention and optimal treatment.

How many times have you come across a child who has been labelled as being very naughty, disturbing others, getting into fights with other children, not interested in academics, day dreamer and so on???

I think we all have come across these children very often and in fact the child could be suffering with ADHD!!!

October is celebrated as ADHD Awareness month.

ADHD can be diagnosed with professional help, detailed history of onset, duration, and progression. Neurological examination and psychological evaluations help us to know the problem.

Symptoms of ADHD improves over time with proper interventions like Behavior Modification, Individualized Education Intervention Programs and Medications (in older children). Interventions have a long-term impact on a child's life and his well being as an adult.

Let's join this campaign to increase awareness, remove stigma around ADHD, support children and adults with ADHD and grow towards an inclusive society. Let's join hands and pledge that no child is deprived of the help that he needs.
