Facial muscles are superficial skeletal muscles responsible for facial expressions, speech, blinking, and oral functions. Unlike other muscles, they insert into the skin, allowing visible movement of the face.
They are supplied by the Facial Nerve (Cranial Nerve VII).
Clinical relevance in physiotherapy:
• Bell’s palsy
• Stroke-related facial weakness
• TMJ dysfunction
• Post-surgical facial rehabilitation
Physiotherapy management includes:
• Facial muscle exercises
• Neuromuscular re-education
• Mirror therapy
• Electrical stimulation (when indicated)
These muscles play a vital role in communication, emotional expression, and functional activities like eating and speaking.
