There are six nerve centers or chakras in the astral spine. An upward flow of energy through the chakras accompanies divine awakening, while a downward flow of energy signals attachment to matter and a darkening effect on one’s consciousness.
The point between the eyebrows, the sixth chakra, is that part of the body where the mind becomes focused in concentration. Perhaps you have noticed the tendency of people to knit their brows or frown when engrossed in a project or making an important point in a conversation. Understanding this truth and consciously putting your attention at that point, you discover that the mind actually does become focused there. This is one of the central teachings of yoga.
When our energy is uplifted in the spine and focused at the point between the eyebrows, we begin to approach divine consciousness. But in the beginning of our spiritual quest, we encounter what might be called “gates” or “doors” (words often used to describe the seven chakras) that need to be unlocked. Through regular meditation and spiritual living, those gates gradually open.
