🧠Understanding Epilepsy & Its Surgical Treatment – By Dr. Himanshu Champaneri
At
The 4th Meeting of the Young Neurosurgeons Forum of the Neurological Society of India
Speaker: Dr. Himanshu Champaneri – Functional and Epilepsy Neurosurgeon
🩺 Presentation Overview:
1. What is Epilepsy?
Epilepsy is a brain disorder where nerve cell activity becomes disturbed.
This causes seizures – which can be jerking movements, loss of awareness, or unusual behavior.
It's a neurological condition, not a mental illness.
👉 Imagine a short circuit in the brain – that’s what a seizure is.
2. What is Drug-Resistant Epilepsy (DRE)?
Most epilepsy patients get relief from medicines.
But 30–40% of patients don’t respond to medicines.
➤ This condition is called Drug-Resistant Epilepsy (DRE).
đź’Š How do you know if it's DRE?
If seizures continue even after trying two proper anti-seizure medications, it’s drug-resistant.
3. Why Surgery is Needed in DRE:
When medicines fail, surgery becomes the best hope.
Surgery doesn’t mean open-brain surgery in all cases – there are many modern, less invasive techniques.
The goal is: Stop seizures OR Reduce their frequency and improve the patient’s life.
🔍 Dr. Himanshu’s Slide: Surgical Treatment Approaches
Dr. Himanshu explained 3 main types of epilepsy surgeries:
âś… 1. Resection / Disconnection
This is the main surgical treatment for DRE.
The part of the brain causing seizures is either:
Removed (resection)
Disconnected from other brain areas
Best for focal epilepsy (where the seizure starts in one area).
âś… 2. Lesioning (Stereotactic Surgery)
If seizure origin is deep inside the brain, where open surgery isn’t safe…
Stereotactic lesioning is used:
➤ A focused beam or electrode burns that area.
Very precise, safe, and less invasive.
âś… 3. Neuromodulation Devices
If surgery isn’t possible, then use implanted devices:
VNS (Vagus Nerve Stimulation)
DBS (Deep Brain Stimulation)
RNS (Responsive Neurostimulation)
These devices send controlled signals to the brain to prevent seizures.
🎯 Main Message Dr. Himanshu Delivered:
> "Epilepsy is curable in many cases – especially Drug-Resistant ones – with proper surgical evaluation and modern techniques."
📣 Why This is Important for Social Media:
This isn’t just a conference update – it’s an awareness message:
Many epilepsy patients don’t know surgery can help.
People fear brain surgery, but modern methods are safe & effective.
Parents of kids with epilepsy, or adults with uncontrolled seizures, should know they have hope beyond medicines.
