Wisdom teeth are the evolutionary leftovers from a time when humans had larger jaws and consumed tough, uncooked foods. These third molars helped our ancestors grind down raw plants and meats to make them easier to digest.
Today, most people have smaller jaws, which is why wisdom teeth often become impacted, causing pain, swelling, or misalignment. While some lucky individuals have enough space for them, many need surgical removal to prevent dental issues.
Interestingly, not everyone develops all four wisdom teeth. Genetics, diet, and evolution all play a role in their presence—or absence—making them a fascinating glimpse into our ancient past and how our bodies continue to adapt.
