UMOYA Sports : Play Beyond Barriers

UMOYA Sports : Play Beyond Barriers Umoya Sports champions the attitude by bringing sports in lives of children with disabilities and promote inclusion through sports

Umoya, derives its meaning from the African language Zulu which translates to “Spirit”. Umoya Sports is a non-profit organization aiming to build an inclusive society by bringing people with disabilities and able bodied individuals together through sports. We inspire to create equal opportunities for all and use sports as a platform to develop life skills and healthy habits among people with disabilities that will help them socially. We hope to build friendships by enabling people with Disability and able bodied individuals to participate in sports together – bond over common love; understand and appreciate other’s problems, perspectives. We believe such levelled platforms will build empathy and awareness about people with disability, thereby bringing a change in the society and encourage inclusion.

Big news! Big pride! Big cheers! 🥳🏏

We are so proud to share that two visually impaired students from our partner institute, ASTHA, got selected in the Delhi Blind women cricket team and travelled to Chandigarh for the Triangular Blind Women Cricket Tournament— and came back with a 3rd position win! 🥉

A special shoutout to our coaches, Najrana and Rozi, for their relentless commitment and supporting them, training, mentoring, and believing in them every step of the way.

This is why inclusive sports matters — it builds confidence, leadership, independence, and dreams.

Let’s keep creating spaces where every child gets to play, compete, and shine. ✨

So proud of all our children, each one is a champion! 🌟

More than a game. 🏀♿

When youth with disabilities step onto the court, they aren’t just playing sport — they are rewriting narratives.

Narratives of limitation, dependency, and “can’t”.
This is confidence, community, and courage in motion.

Courage to fail.
The joy of rising again.
Trust in each other.
A space where disability disappears and ability takes centre stage.

Sports is not about sympathy. It’s about skill, discipline, resilience, and ambition — the same ingredients that build champions anywhere in the world.

Because when we include everyone in the game,
we don’t just build better athletes —
we build a stronger, fairer, more powerful India. 🇮🇳

What does inclusion feel like?

Sometimes, you have to experience it to understand it.

In Lucknow, parents, teachers, and community workers came together for a Disability Orientation & Awareness Workshop — where we used games, simulations, and play to step into the world of children with disabilities.

Through laughter, reflection, and powerful moments of realisation, participants:

✨ Built empathy
✨ Understood diverse needs of children
✨ Learned how to support children with disabilities to foster inclusive education

Because inclusion is not just about sympathy —
It’s about understanding, respect, and equal opportunity.

🇮🇳 A Moment of Pride for Umoya Sports! 🌍
We are incredibly proud to share that our athlete, Manish, has been selected to represent India at the Capital Para Athletics Grand Prix in Canberra, Australia 🇦🇺 — a huge milestone in his sporting journey.

Adding to this remarkable journey Manish will also received his International Classification, one of the most important and challenging steps for any para-athlete aspiring to compete at the global level.

This classification opens the door to international competitions as he is set to represent India in upcoming Commonwealth games and showcase his years of dedication, resilience, and hard work.

Manish’s journey is a powerful reminder of what is possible when talent meets opportunity and belief. At Umoya Sports, we are honoured to support him as he takes this giant leap onto the world stage.

The road ahead is global — and Manish is ready.
Let’s cheer him on as he carries the Indian flag and forward! 💪🔥

Learning from the System, Learning to Change the System

We recently had the privilege of hosting Mainak Roy—a fellow entrepreneur, friend, and deeply thoughtful practitioner—at Umoya Sports, where he spent time with our core team and TSI (The Second Innings) fellows.

Mainak shared powerful, grounded insights from his work with government systems, particularly around training public school teachers and fostering inclusion for children with disabilities in government schools.
His reflections went beyond theory—bringing lived realities, systemic constraints, and most importantly, possibilities into the room.

What stayed with us was the clarity he brought on what it truly takes to foster inclusion in schools:

➡️ investing in teachers as long-term change agents
➡️ and reimagining representation by enabling teachers with disabilities to be part of government schools—not as a token but equitable opportunities for all

The conversation helped our team move from intent to action. It sharpened our thinking on how inclusion must be structural, sustained, and systemic, not programmatic or episodic.

As Umoya begins to work more closely with government ecosystems, this session grounded us—reminding us that meaningful inclusion is built through patience, partnership, and people who believe change is possible from within.

Grateful, inspired, and more committed than ever.

Champions Rise! 🏆

Our hearts are full of pride as we celebrate an incredible milestone — our children winning the 1st State Deaf Volleyball Championship 🙌

This victory is even more special because the winning team from Amar Jyoti was coached by our very own team member, Durgesh, whose dedication, belief, and commitment to inclusive sport truly shone through on and off the court. 💪🏐

This championship is not just about medals and trophies. It’s about breaking barriers, building confidence, and proving that when children with disabilities are given the right opportunities, they don’t just participate — they excel.

Congratulations to every child who played with passion, teamwork, and resilience. You’ve inspired an entire community and taken the Deaf sports movement one powerful step forward.

Here’s to many more firsts, many more wins, and a future where inclusive sport is the norm, not the exception. 🌟

🌟⚽ Leadership in action. ⚽🌟

Our team member, Ayush, who leads Umoya’s Blind Football program, is stepping onto the national stage as Team Coach for the Uttar Pradesh Blind Football Team at the Nationals!

From building the grassroots program with passion and purpose to now guiding athletes at the highest level, Ayush’s journey reflects what inclusive sport can truly unlock — leadership, expertise, and opportunity. His work continues to strengthen blind football pathways while inspiring young athletes to dream bigger and play bolder.

We couldn’t be prouder as he represents not just UP, but the spirit of inclusion, commitment, and excellence that Umoya stands for.

All the best, Coach Ayush and the team — we are cheering and rooting for your success!

Welcoming New Year 2026 in style.

As we step into the New Year, we celebrate the spirit of winning that defines us. Just like our own Sunil—Captain of the Wheelchair Cricket Team—who led his team to a championship victory, may this year inspire all of us to dream bigger, push boundaries, and keep winning many more laurels together.

Here’s to a year filled with courage, teamwork, and countless new opportunities—where we reach, include, and empower many more children with disabilities to discover their strength, talent, and love for sport.

May the New Year bring more victories on and off the field, and remind us that when inclusion leads, everyone wins. 🌟🏆
