Some Other Interesting Food Facts:

1. Tea or coffee should never be the first thing that you start your day with. Morning is the time when your body’s metabolism is good and you need to start your day with some very nutritious foods like a seasonal fruit, detox waters, dry fruits, sprouts etc. You can even have a protein supplement or just milk as the first thing of your day.

2. Now some people think that if not tea, then let’s have green tea. But even you should not start your day with green tea (or any tea) as it also contains caffeine as well as epicatechins etc. The best time to have it is either in mid meals or 1 hour post meals. The University of Maryland Medical Center recommends drinking between two and three cups of green tea each day. This would provide a dose of 240 to 320 milligrams of polyphenols daily.

3. Only eating too much of sugar, desserts, savories etc does not lead to diabetes and cardiac issues, eating anything too much in just one meal and then fasting for long hours makes you prone to these medical conditions. Although there are foods like steamed vegetables, salads, clear soups etc that can be taken in large amounts.

4. Licorice more commonly known as Mulethi is anti-inflammatory, anti-ulcer, laxative, antiviral, antifungal, antibacterial, antioxidant and anti-tumor properties. The best way you can have it is soak it overnight in water, filter it in the morning and drink the water empty stomach in the morning.

5. Milk and dairy products is a very good source of CLA and hence helps in reduction of belly fat.

Food-as-Protection and the Fight Against Hypertension

When it comes to controlling blood pressure, dietary recommendations tend to focus on what not to eat. However, also emphasizing which foods to eat more of offers a positive and encouraging approach for patients and provides even better protection against hypertension. For example, while potassium is often lauded for lowering blood pressure — and in some short-term trials, increasing potassium intake did counteract blood pressure elevation in response to dietary sodium — there currently is not enough evidence to support dietary potassium specifically to reduce blood pressure. However, potassium has not been ruled out entirely, especially in a synergistic role when combined with other elements of a healthy diet.

Magnesium may act through several mechanisms to reduce blood vessel constriction. Controlled human intervention studies show nitrates can improve endothelial function, promote vasodilation and reduce blood pressure even in the relatively small amounts achievable in a healthy diet. Nitrates convert to nitric oxide in the body, and research suggests nitric oxide is a potent vasodilator essential for blood vessel health, promoting blood flow and reducing inflammation and platelet clumping.

What Is Vitamin K's Bone-Building Potential?
BY GINGER HULTIN

While calcium and vitamin D often are thought of as the most important nutrients for bone health, vitamin K also plays a role in preventing bone loss — but to what extent?
Studies suggest getting enough of this vitamin through food sources is likely needed to prevent excess bone loss and help prevent osteoporosis, but vitamin K continues to gain traction in the supplements aisle. In food, vitamin K is synthesized by plants and found mainly in green leafy vegetables — such as spinach, Swiss chard, parsley, kale and broccoli — and some fruits — such as kiwi, avocado and grapes — in the form of vitamin K1 or phytonadione. Vitamin K intake requirements (percent daily value for adults is 80 micrograms μg) are easily met from food. For example, one cup of raw spinach or kale provides nearly twice the DV for adults. While dietary sources offer abundant vitamin K, some research studies suggest the supplemental "free form" is more readily absorbed by the body because it is bound to compounds within plants.
According to the Natural Medicines Database, there is "insufficient reliable evidence to rate" vitamin K's effectiveness in the treatment of osteoporosis. Drug-nutrient interactions of moderate and major effects are important to discuss with patients interested in vitamin K supplementation. These include anti-diabetes drugs, blood thinning medications, the weight-loss drug Orlistat, bile acid medications, certain antibiotics and several vitamins.
