Simple surgical innovation offers promising solution to oral cancer crisis

Oral cancer is a serious concern in India. It’s among the top 3 most prevalent cancers in India. It makes up nearly 40% of all cancer cases. Around 60,000 new cases are reported every year and more than five people die every hour due to this disease. Studies show that oral cancers begin with small, early-stage conditions known as Oral Premalignant Lesions (OPLs).

A recent clinical study led by Dr Mandeep Singh Malhotra, Senior Oncologist, Co founder, Art of healing cancer
might offer a promising solution to this problem. The team used Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) for reconstructing oral mucosal defects after lesion removal.

India’s breast cancer burden has increased five-fold since 1990. Global tally may triple by 2050

India logged nearly 2.03 lakh new cases in 2023, marking a 477.8 percent rise compared to 1990. Deaths reached 1.02 lakh, a 352.3 percent increase.

India’s breast cancer burden has multiplied dramatically over the past three decades, with new cases rising nearly fivefold since 1990—a surge that mirrors an alarming global trend—a new global analysis published Tuesday in The Lancet Oncology has said.

Dr Mandeep Singh Malhotra, Director of Surgical Oncology at CK Birla Hospital in Delhi, told ThePrint, “We need to focus on prevention, early detection, and access to treatment. Lifestyle changes, healthier diets, more physical activity, and reduced substance use are critical.”

Dr Mandeep Singh Malhotra Completes 50 Robotic Breast Surgeries

As medical science is advancing, cancer treatment has become more precise. Nipple-Sparing Breast surgery is an excellent example of precise treatment in cases of breast cancer. Doctors explain the hidden reproductive and hormonal impact of chemotherapy.When Lisa Ray revealed that chemotherapy pushed her into early menopause at just 37, she also highlighted a reality many young cancer survivors quietly face.

Diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2009, the actor has spoken about feeling unprepared for the sudden loss of fertility and the emotional toll that followed.

According to Dr Mandeep Singh Malhotra, Director – Surgical Oncology at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, chemotherapy works by targeting rapidly dividing cancer cells but can also affect other fast-growing cells in the body, including those in the reproductive system.

“As a result, chemotherapy may damage ovarian function and lead to temporary or permanent menopause in some patients,” he explains.
