Sciatica is a term used to describe pain that radiates along the path of the sciatic nerve, which is the longest nerve in the body. The pain typically starts in the lower back or buttock and can extend down the back of the thigh, calf, and sometimes into the foot. Sciatica is often caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, commonly due to conditions such as herniated discs, spinal stenosis, or degenerative disc disease. Symptoms of sciatica may include sharp or shooting pain, numbness, tingling, or weakness in the affected leg.
Diagnosis of Sciatica:
A healthcare provider will typically perform a physical examination and may order imaging tests such as X-rays, MRI scans, to diagnose the underlying cause of sciatica and determine the extent of nerve compression or damage.
Treatment of Sciatica:
1. Conservative Measures: Initial treatment for sciatica often includes rest, ice or heat therapy, over-the-counter pain relievers, and physical therapy exercises to improve flexibility, strengthen muscles, and reduce inflammation.
2. Steroid Injections: Corticosteroid injections directly into the affected area can help reduce inflammation and provide temporary relief from sciatic pain.
3. Surgery: Surgery for sciatica is usually considered if conservative treatments are ineffective, and the pain is severe or progressive. Surgical options may include discectomy (removal of herniated disc material).
The most effective surgical approach for treating a slip disc is an endoscopic discectomy, which takes 40 minutes and only requires a two-hour hospital stay for the patient. Because it is performed under local anaesthesia, there is very little chance of infection or blood loss, making it a completely safe and effective operation. The patient converses with the surgeon while fully conscious throughout this process. We specifically target the disc fragment that is pushing on the nerve and causing sciatica pain during an endoscopic discectomy. During an endoscopic discectomy, no muscles are severed, and the scar is little bigger than a fingernail.

It's important to consult with a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis and personalized treatment plan if you suspect you have sciatica or are experiencing symptoms of sciatic pain. Early intervention and proper management can help improve outcomes and reduce the impact of sciatica on daily life.
