The occipitofrontalis is effectively two muscle bellies (frontal and occipital) united by an aponeurosis called the galea aponeurotica, so named because itforms what resembles a helmet.
Origin:-
Frontal belly. skin of eyebrows.
Occipital belly: lateral two-thirds of superior nuchal line of occipital bone. Mastoid
process of temporal bone.

Insertion :-
Galea aponeurotica.

Nerve Supply :-
Fascial nerve(VII) (Posterior auricular and temporal branches).

Action :-
Frontal belly - raises eyebrows and wrinkles skin of forehead horizontally.
Occipital belly - pulls scalp backward.

Basic functional movement :-
Facilitates facial expressions, e.g. looking surprised/frowning.

Referred pain patterns :-
Frontal belly - localized pain with some referral upward and over forehead on same
side.
Occipital belly - pain in lateral and anterior scalp, diffuse into back of head and into
orbit.

Indications :-
H e a d ache, pain (back of head), cannot sleep on back/pillow, earache, pain behind
eye/eyebrow/eyelid. Visual activity (jumping text)on reading black and white print,
squinting, wrinkly forehead, Tension headache, pain above eye.

Causes:-
Anxiety, Overwork, Lifestyle, Computer use, wrong Glasses, frowning, postural

Differential Diagnosis:-
Scalp Tingling, Greater occipital nerve entrapment.

Connections :-
occipital muscles, clavicular division of SCM, semispinalis capitis, zygomaticus
major, Platysma, scalene, posterior neck Muscles, eye muscles.

Self Help Technique
1. Study anatomy.
2. Locate and feel/palpate the Tender trigger point — usually at the
back of the head.
3. Rest the back of the head/trigger Point on a pressure ball for up to
10 minutes until the pain eases.
Advise – Avoid frowning and wrinkling of forehead
