Vision: “To contribute towards the creation of a society, which values human dignity and enhances mental and emotional well-being for all”. The mission is “to advocate with and provide programmes and services for people with mental disorders, their families and the community to enhance and promote the mental health of individuals and communities in India”
Mental illness though common is severely misunderstood. The myths surrounding this illness, the words used to describe people living with mental illness and the media depiction underscore the impact; such misinformation leads to stereotyping, trivializing the impact of the illness and patronizes people, often treating them as mentally handicapped. Fear and misunderstanding prevent people from seeking help, resulting in worsening symptoms and increased acuity. This stigma contributes to isolation, shame and diminishes the ability to access opportunities and resources; stigma, that is a reality for people with a mental illness and is reported as one of their greatest barriers to a complete and satisfying life. Sambandh offers hope and support to overcome these barriers. Our fundamental belief is that every person can sufficiently recover from the effects of mental illness. Working with a unique, evidence-based approach to looking at recovery from mental illness, and we offer a gateway to Recovery supports, education and advocacy: a pre-vocational day programme, outreach support, family self-help, family counselling, and shared living home. Community awareness activities and advocacy create a foundation for community inclusion. Recovery focuses on valuing and building on capacities, talents, coping skills, and the inherent worth of individuals. By building on these strengths, people engage in new and expanded life roles. The process of recovery moves forward through interaction with others in supportive, trust-based relationships.
