Glaucoma Without Pain: The ‘Silent Thief’ of Sight Explained
Glaucoma is one of the leading causes of irreversible blindness — yet most people are unaware they have it until significant vision loss has already occurred. Unlike infections or injuries, glaucoma usually develops without pain, redness, or noticeable symptoms, making it a silent but serious threat to eyesight.
The condition primarily results from increased pressure inside the eye, which gradually damages the optic nerve. Since this damage happens slowly, patients rarely notice the early blind spots in their peripheral vision. By the time symptoms become obvious, the disease is often advanced.
People with a family history of glaucoma, diabetes, high myopia, or those above 40 should be especially cautious. Modern diagnostic tools such as OCT scans, tonometry, and visual field testing help detect glaucoma early — long before vision loss becomes permanent.
With timely treatment, including eye drops, laser therapy, or minimally invasive glaucoma procedures, most cases can be effectively controlled.
If you’ve never had a glaucoma screening or are experiencing subtle vision changes, it’s important to schedule an eye evaluation. Early detection is the key to protecting your sight for a lifetime.
