🩷Make Stress Your Friend🩷

Weird as it may sound, this is exactly what you need to do to beat stress, says Kelly McGonigal, Health Psychologist in her TED talk.

So, if you feel anxious or frustrated because of your stress responses i.e. cold sweats, palpitations, stomach cramps, rapid breathing, etc. before a BIG event such as a critical presentation or an interview or an exam, READ ON...

Here are the key take-outs from McGonigal’s talk:
✅ Don’t view these stress responses negatively
✅ Instead, tell yourself that they are good for you because they indicate that your body is energising and preparing you to respond better to the challenge (e.g. by sending more Oxygen to your brain)
✅ When you rethink your stress responses as helpful, you can not only perform better under stress, but also improve your heart-health.

In conclusion, when you view your stress responses as helpful, you can create the "biology of courage”.

🌟We Feel The Way We Think🌟

Thank you to Amita Devnani for inviting me for a stimulating discussion on Cognitive Restructuring for Managing Distressful Emotions and Behaviours.

The following 5 key tenets of CBT were explored in depth in our podcast:

1️⃣ Thoughts, feelings and behaviours are intricately intertwined

2️⃣ Distressful emotions and behaviours are not triggered by situations or events, but by the meaning we attach to them

3️⃣ A shift in the way we view the event can bring about a change in the way we experience it

4️⃣ 4 Irrational Thinking Patterns (cognitive distortions):
✅ Demandingness: Unrealistic (dogmatic or rigid) expectations
✅ Self/ People Rating: Negative absolute evaluations
✅ Catastrophising: Overly-exaggerated negative predictions
✅ Low Frustration Tolerance: Extreme intolerance for discomfort

5️⃣ Identifying and consciously changing dysfunctional thinking patterns helps regulate emotions and behaviours
