As a concerned citizen and a Senior Consultant Physiotherapist, I want to bring attention to a pressing issue that affects our children's health and well-being: the weight of school bags.

It's alarming to see young students lugging around oversized bags packed with heavy books, laptops, sports equipment, and lunchboxes. These bags can weigh as much as two stone, causing irreparable harm to our children's developing spines.

The statistics are staggering:

- Half of all children suffer from back pain by the age of 14.
- There's a rising incidence of spinal abnormalities, including scoliosis, a disfiguring curvature of the spine.

As a physiotherapist, I've seen firsthand the devastating effects of heavy school bags on children's health. It's essential that we take immediate action to address this issue.

So, what can we do?

1. *Parents, take control*: Ensure your child packs only what they need for the next day.
2. *Wear backpacks correctly*: Encourage your child to wear their backpack on both shoulders, with the chest strap and pelvic strap (if fitted) securely fastened.
3. *Weight limit*: Remind your child to keep their backpack weight below 10% of their body weight.
