WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Smartphones have become an absolute necessity for communities, as we are working with them during the times of this pandemic to coordinate our initiatives and relief measures. For communities, not having access to smartphones translates to not having access to life-saving information and not being part of decision-making processes. Moreover, children have been very affected during these times because their education has been put on hold, and one way to reduce the impact of this is giving them access to smartphones to access their classes and educational materials.

We have been raising funds from various funding agencies for this purpose, but we haven't been able to cover as much as we need at the moment. We are currently working with 3,00,000 beneficiaries in about 1000 villages in Assam. Given this, we are requesting you to help us by donating whatever amount, however little, for this purpose. We have seen that tiny amounts add up to considerable amounts while helping communities, and would encourage you to donate whatever you can for this cause.

We would also like to state that we are 80G certified, so the donations you make to our organisation will be tax-exempt, and you shall be receiving a certificate for this from our end.

We are really excited to share that our project titled "Moi Pragati", implemented with support and funding from CRISIL foundation, has received the prestigious National CSR award 2018 in the "CSR in Challenging Circumstances, Northeast" category. The award was presented to the team by the Hon'ble President of India at a ceremony in Delhi.

Huge gratitude to our field staff and internal team working on the project, who have braved odds to get this project running and sustainable. More power to the rural women of Assam who have been immensely helpful and supportive in our efforts to carry out financial literacy initiatives, and our Sakhis for emerging as powerful community leaders!

On the 23rd of August, 2019, a team from RGVN went for flood relief distribution to three villages in Morigaon - Doipara, Bordia and Bilimara, funded by KNH.

We decided to have a systematic approach to flood relief: do a survey and needs assessment, set up a committee with members of the community who autonomously identified the most affected families in need of relief, prepared a list of their names, and distributed the items in an organised manner with the help of community leaders.

This approach was greatly appreciated by the community, with whom we had a feedback session about the items distributed and the process. The organised manner of distribution meant lesser conflicts, more understanding and more empathy during these difficult times.

This is a good example of a simple initiative to create flood-resilient villages. Under the RGVN-KKS project, a simple raised platform was created by members of the community using mud, the size of which was 40 squared feet and 7 feet above ground level. During the floods, farm animals such as cattle, pigs, goats etc took shelter and were unharmed.

One example of how flood-resilient solutions can be simple, empower the community and be environment-friendly.

Earlier this week, a team of officials from RGVN visited our impact areas in Morigaon district which have been highly affected by floods. The visit was made to identify the needs of the community during this difficult time, so that an appropriate response could be devised. Meetings with the community along with a recce of the damage were done so that immediate relief could be provided, while also planning for long-term,sustainable, flood resistant solutions.

We designed a relief kit with essential items based on the initial survey done. To help us with our efforts to help the community at Morigaon, please donate on this link:

A small initiative, a gentle yet powerful nudge of the facts that drive what we do! There is a very strong gender component to the livelihood initiatives that RGVN does, and it is facts like these that drive us to work for and with vulnerable women in rural, semi-urban and urban settings of North-East India. Updated on a bi-weekly basis, Yearning for Learning reminds us of the gaps that we are yet to fill, and the motivation to carry on every day.

In the month of December, 2018, RGVN held a workshop titled "Zoom In Zoom Out 2018", which was facilitated in the Whole Person Process Facilitation (WPPF) container, which creates a life nurturing environment for any interaction, meeting or workshop. Facilitated by Tulika Mehra, this workshop was very well-received by its participants, which included people from RGVN and other organisations, as well as a foreign national. Here's to building stronger working relationships and creating a safe and inclusive workplace!
