Many people have "binaural" hearing loss, affecting both ears. However, some may experience “unilateral” hearing loss i.e. affecting just one ear, either from birth or later in life.
This unilateral loss is called single-sided deafness (SSD) if it's profound or near-profound. It’s important to note that SSD can occur gradually or suddenly and requires prompt treatment as it should be considered as a medical emergency.
