Every day, we live surrounded by noise. The noise of deadlines, notifications, traffic, and pollution.

Pressure, pain, stress, and fatigue become routine parts of our lives; a kind of background noise our mind and body slowly get accustomed to. Only, we don’t really notice it.

Most of us don’t consciously begin our day. We simply move from sleep straight into activity.

The alarm rings, we get up immediately, head to the washroom, or instinctively reach for our phone. Messages, notifications, news updates, and reminders flood the mind before the body has fully woken up. This has become such a common routine that we rarely stop to question it.

However, research in neuroscience and circadian biology suggests that the first 5–10 minutes after waking up set the tone for your nervous system, hormones, focus, and energy levels for the entire day.

During this window, the nervous system is highly sensitive, and the signals we give it determine whether we move into a calm, balanced state or a stressed, reactive one.

Here’s what your first choice actually means:

A. Checking your phone
