AMMI! YOU ARE ABSOLUTELY PERFECT 💖

Anytime I visit my mother, my Ammi, she often asks me, "Mera rang bhot kaala hogaya na? Is beech bhot tan hogaya. Mere chehre pe dhabbe aur wrinkles bhi bhot aajare na?"😓
Background: From a very young age, my mother was often made to feel bad about her complexion, and somewhere along the way, she internalized that insecurity.🥺

Each time she asks me this, I simply reply, "Nai ammi, aisa kuch bhi nahi hai." But she feels I’m either disinterested or just being polite. 💔

Growing up in a family that wasn’t used to heart-to-heart emotional talks, I’ve never been able to truly express my feelings to her.

Here’s what I’ve always wanted to say…

" Ammi! To me you are the most beautiful person. Do you know, why Kajol was my favourite actress? It was because, she looked like you. With the same beautiful wheatish complexion and big expressive eyes, she reminded me of you. I look at your face - your wrinkles and spots, you so dislike and I see you walking in hot sun, everyday to go to work, to provide a good living for us. I see your hands, and in them I see the hardwork you put into the countless meals, you prepared for us."
I wish I could go back in time and hug the little girl that you were, who was made to feel, that she was never good enough.
Let me really tell you what I feel, " You are not just good enough. Ammi! You are absolutely perfect"🥰🌈

🌟 RAISE THEM RIGHT 🌟

In this series, we’ll explore the four classical parenting styles and their impact on children. These styles are:

1. Authoritarian
2. Permissive
3. Uninvolved
4. Authoritative

Today, let’s focus on Authoritarian Parenting.

AUTHORITARIAN PARENTING

This style is marked by a rigid, strict “Because I told you so” attitude.

Let’s look at a common scenario to see how an authoritarian parent reacts:

Scenario: Your child’s television time is over, but they don’t want to stop watching and start throwing a tantrum. 📺😡

What would an authoritarian parent do?
The parent would immediately switch off the TV. As the child starts crying, the parent would likely get frustrated, yell, or try to scare the child into submission. In some cases, they may even resort to hitting the child. 😠

LONG-TERM IMPACT:
Children raised under this parenting style may develop one of two distinct personality traits:

1. The Anxious People-Pleaser 😔: They grow up constantly seeking external validation. When faced with hostility or criticism, they often become anxious or depressed and struggle to cope.

2. The Rebellious Individual 🚫: After enduring strict control, they may rebel against authority once they escape that environment, challenging everything and everyone they encounter.

In conclusion, it’s important to avoid becoming the kind of parent whose approach is “Do as I say, or else you’ll be yelled at or punished.” Let’s aim for a more balanced approach that fosters growth and confidence in our children. 🌱

🩸 IRON: THE GOLD FOR YOUR KIDS 🩸

In conclusion to our iron series, today’s post focuses on ways to prevent iron deficiency anemia and highlights iron-rich foods for your child’s diet.

Prevention Tips:
1. Avoid cow’s milk in the first year of life and limit intake to 300-400 ml after that. 🍼
2. From 6 months onwards, when introducing complementary foods, include iron-rich foods in your baby’s diet. 🍽️

Iron Sources:
Non-vegetarian iron (ferric form) is better absorbed than vegetarian iron (ferrous form). 🍖
Pairing iron-rich foods with vitamin C 🍊 improves absorption, while combining them with calcium 🥛 reduces absorption of both nutrients.

Tip: Give calcium-rich foods (milk, curd) 2-3 hours after iron-rich meals for optimal absorption. ⏳

Top Iron-Rich Foods to Include Daily:
🦴 Non-Vegetarian Sources:
1. Bone marrow
2. Minced liver (kaleji)
3. Minced meat (kheema)
🥬 Vegetarian Sources:
1. Dates 🌴
2. Figs 🍇
3. Jaggery 🍯
4. Green leafy vegetables 🥬

Try to include a balanced mix of these foods in your child’s meals early on to help prevent iron deficiency and support their growth! 💪👶

🩸 IRON: THE GOLD FOR YOUR KIDS 🩸

In continuation of the iron series, today’s post focuses on the complications of untreated iron deficiency anemia in children. Let’s dive into the potential risks:

1. Malnutrition 🍽️: Since iron deficiency reduces a child’s appetite, they may not consume enough nourishing foods, which can lead to generalized malnutrition.

2. Heart Failure 💔: In severe cases, dangerously low hemoglobin levels can strain the heart. As the heart works harder to supply oxygen throughout the body, this can lead to heart failure, presenting with symptoms like swelling in the feet and difficulty breathing.

3. Breath-Holding Spells 😮‍💨: Though breath-holding spells are common in toddlers, where they cry excessively and hold their breath until they pass out, iron deficiency can make these episodes more frequent and severe, sometimes even leading to seizures.

4. Simple Febrile Seizures 🌡️: Children aged 6 months to 5 years may experience seizures when they develop a high fever. With iron deficiency anemia, the frequency of febrile seizures tends to increase.

Next post: Stay tuned for more in our series on how to prevent and treat iron deficiency anemia in children! 📅

🩸 IRON: THE GOLD FOR YOUR KIDS 🩸

Iron is a crucial micronutrient that often goes unnoticed in discussions about children's health. While many are aware of iron deficiency in adolescent girls and pregnant women, it's less known that toddlers and young children also face a high risk of iron deficiency. Let's explore the reasons behind this in today’s post:

1. Cow Milk 🥛: Introducing cow milk too early (before 1 year) or in large quantities (more than 350-400 ml daily) can lead to cow milk protein enteropathy. This condition causes inflammation in the intestine, resulting in chronic, minor blood loss that can deplete iron levels in your child.

2. Deficient Diet 🍽️: Offering the same iron-poor foods daily for the sake of convenience or to avoid mealtime struggles can result in a lack of iron intake, leading to iron deficiency anemia in your little one.

3. Picky Eating 😖: Toddlers and young children often go through phases of picky eating, avoiding certain foods while fixating on others. If parents continue to offer only the child's preferred foods without encouraging more nutritious options, this can result in iron deficiency.

4. Intestinal Worms 🪱: Kids are naturally curious and often put their hands in their mouths, increasing the risk of intestinal worms. These parasites create tiny ulcers in the intestine, leading to chronic blood loss and eventually iron deficiency anemia.

Keeping an eye on these factors can help ensure that your child gets the iron they need to grow strong and healthy! 💪

Stay tuned for tomorrow’s post where we’ll discuss the signs and symptoms of iron deficiency anemia in kids. 📅
